Sequel to the report of alleged sexual
abuse of female inmates by prisons
officials at the Owerri Prison, female
inmates have been taken to the Federal
Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, for
compulsory pregnancy test.
The female convicts and those on awaiting
trial, it was gathered, were being taken to
the hospital on the directive of the
Comptroller General of Prisons, Zakari
Ibrahim, who sent a delegation to Owerri
prisons, to ascertain the veracity of the
alleged sexual misconduct between prison
officials and the inmates.
According to an impeccable source, who
pleaded anonymity, the parents of a
particular inmate, who came to visit their
convicted child were shocked to see her
in advanced stage of pregnancy.
The source disclosed: “When the girl was
brought to the prison, no one noticed that
she was pregnant until a few months
later. When her parents came to visit her,
they were shocked to find out that she
was pregnant. I think that is why the
management is conducting the pregnancy
test.”
When contacted, the state Prison
Controller, Reverend Cannon Isaiah
Amaliri, could not confirm or deny the
report.
Nobody at the Federal Medical Centre
agreed to speak on the matter.
Meanwhile, a source that pleaded
anonymity, confirmed that prison
authorities had used the FMC, Owerri in
the past for pregnancy tests.
