An adult male elephant was Friday
mowed down by a train in West Bengal’s
Darjeeling district, a forest official said.
The incident comes a day after a jumbo
with its head chopped off was found
also in the same district.
The incident happened in Mongpong,
located on the fringe of Mahananda
Wildlife Sanctuary, when the Siliguri-
Alipurduar Express hit the jumbo.
“The incident happened Friday morning.
There is a need to further restrict the
speed limit of the trains on the Siliguri-
Alipurduar stretch. We are discussing on
lowering the speed limit to below 25
km,” said Chief Wildlife Warden
N.C.Bahuguna.
Since 2004, when the tracks on the 163-
km long Siliguri-Alipurduar route were
converted to broad gauge, speeding
trains have mowed nearly 40 elephants.
Following the spate of mowing down
incidents, in 2010 the speed of the
trains was been restricted to 50 km.
The railway lines on the stretch pass
through five forests-Buxa, Jaldapara,
Gorumara, Chapramari and Mahananda.

I Left the industry because of sexual harassment
Gospel singer, Gloria Doyle, back in the
days, made more name because of her
outrageous dress style than her music.
She explains to ‘Nonye Ben-Nwankwo
why she chose that style.
You are now marketing a hotel; have
you left your music career?
No. I have not left it. A friend of mine
runs the hotel and I only help out to
market it. We are trying to create
awareness.
Now that you are into hospitality
business, is it not taking your time?
If I tell you that it is not taking my time,
I would be lying. It is taking my time
but I am enjoying it. I will still go back
to the studios. My fans are saying that
they need something from me.
But you released an album last year?
Oh yes I did. I launched the album last
year but a lot of people didn’t buy the
idea of me doing tungba. It is a kind of
juju music. They couldn’t reconcile my
hip hop gospel with tungba.
So the tungba didn’t do well in the
market?
We didn’t even put it in the market at
all. It was just for my fans and family.
So are you forgetting it entirely?
Not really. In the next two or three
years, if I am still in this country, I will
put all the stuff I have done together
and maybe make a compilation of them
all.
What do you mean by if you are still in
the country; do you have plans of
leaving?
My kids are not here. They are in the
US. My son is graduating soon as a
medical doctor. They are doing very
well. I will soon go over there,
especially during his graduation.
You talk as if you are going to settle in
the US eventually…
I would love to settle down there with
my kids eventually. I want to be with
them. I have not seen them for up to
10 years.
Are you saying you have been away
from your kids for 10 years?
I have just seen them once.
If you eventually leave Nigeria for the
US, some might think you left this
country because your career wasn’t
successful…
I wouldn’t think so. It is just that I want
to give my time to my kids. I could
always go to the studio in the US and
record. It wouldn’t really affect the
reunion.
How come you weren’t there for your
kids when they might have needed you
the most?
I was there for them. I call them
everyday on the phone. I was guiding
them and telling them the directions to
follow. They would always call me any
time they needed advice and we were
always on Skype. I just wanted the best
for my kids where they would utilise the
talents they have.
Are they with their father?
They are partially with their father. My
first son is on his own.
With this planned reunion, probably, you
would go back to your ex…
No way. I don’t think it is possible. He
is already married over there and he has
his family.
There was a time your outrageous
dressing stood you out. Is that chapter
closed?
I am almost a grandmother. I am now a
minister who ministers in churches. I
now tell people that I have been there
before. I am more mature now. Then, I
think of my kids too. I need to put them
into consideration as well.
Back then, you didn’t care at all, you
didn’t consider these stuffs you are
mentioning now.
I no even ‘send anybody’ even at the
moment. It is just that I am more
mature now.
How come you never acted?
Actually, I was auditioned last month. I
was in the movie industry a long time
ago. I did quite a number of movies
before I left the industry because of
sexual harassment. It was terrible.
Some people felt I left because I
couldn’t act. But that was a lie. I did
some very good movies. Producers
would tell me they would want to star
me in a particular movie but I should
come to a hotel first. I felt these were
people I ordinarily wouldn’t have
anything to do with them if not because
of entertainment. They were now calling
the shots and because you were
desperate to become a star, you would
give in. But I couldn’t do that. If you
know your worth, you would definitely
scale through. However, I invested my
time writing movies. I am not a
desperate person. I have the face. I
was able to make my name. But I didn’t
get to this level out of desperation. My
greatest concern now and which has
made me proud are my kids.
Do we see you getting married again,
ever?
I am going to be a grandmother soon.
Honestly, I was discussing this with
somebody the other day. The person
was telling me that I need to get
married. My family tells me that I need
to get married. Everybody is telling me
that I need to get married. If you get
me a husband, I will get married. I am
not going husband-hunting. Some
people carry it like a placard ‘I am
looking for husband’ written on it. But
that is not me. I am not desperate. I
don’t want to do things out of
desperation. If husband will come, he
will come. For now, it is not my priority.
But we learnt you were getting married
to a younger lover last year, didn’t it
work out?
It was a lie. It was a joke that spread
like a wild fire. I don’t know where they
saw the picture of me and the young
man.
Are you saying you have not had any
offer of marriage since?
If I say that, I would be lying. I always
consider my kids. They are Igbo, since
their father is an Igbo man. I remember
there was a picture I posted on
Facebook some time ago; I was with a
friend of mine in that picture. My
daughter read the story about me
getting married to a younger lover. She
sent me a mail asking me if I was really
getting married. With the way she asked
it, she obviously meant it could never
be true that I was getting married.
But would it have been a bad idea?
I want my children to come of age. I
want them to be on their own and to be
able to take care of themselves. People
get married and you find out that the
children they had in their previous
marriage would be a problem in the
current marriage. It might even get to a
stage the woman would be asked to
choose between her children and
husband. I can’t subject my children to
that. My being single is still for a
purpose. It is a sacrifice I took because
of my children. It is not easy to be a
single mother. When you have been
married before and you find yourself
taking sole responsibility of your kids’
welfare, it is not an easy thing.
What really happened to your marriage?
I got married at the age of 19. I was
very young. I faced tribal problems.
Then again, my husband was really older
than me. I needed a friend. It is usually
a problem when you don’t get married
to your friend. If you just marry a
husband, you will not enjoy the
marriage. You play, quarrel, make-up,
gist and have fun with your friend. But
with a husband, it is usually not so. You
would be meant to kill a goat or fowl to
appease him when he feels you insulted
him. He will call a family meeting for
you. In all, when I look at my kids, I
don’t regret my marriage.
Some might say you were wild and that
was what made your marriage not to
work…
I am not wild. I have never been wild.
It was just that my dressing was wild.
Oh yes, I agree, I could wear anything. I
looked up to Toni Braxton. Anything she
wore, no matter how outrageous, I
wanted to wear it.
Looking back now, do you regret
dressing those ways?
No. I don’t regret it. But I bring my
pictures and I show the young girls of
these days and I tell them I have been
through this stuff they are doing now. I
tell them that I did it then because of
showbiz and not as they are doing it
now to attract men and sell their
bodies.
The punch
Virgin wife, myth or reality? By Funmi Akingbade
Each time I have the opportunity to
counsel men on relationship and
sexuality, quite a large number of them
want a decent, God-fearing, nice and
financially-dependent lady as a wife, but
not a sexually naïve virgin. They reason
that such a lady will definitely be a thorn
in the flesh on the wedding night. They
compare the task of handling a virgin on
the bed with that of teaching an
elephant how to dance. Putting it
precisely, many guys are not ready to
start fussing with a sexually-naive lady
on their wedding nights.
Many argue that they are not ready to
face another load of emotional stress
after overcoming the stress that
wedding preparations had put on them.
They also dread the teaching rituals of
every other night of the relationship.
But this is actually the best part of the
game. Why would you prefer some
other fellow to help you act the lead
role in the drama?. It is the person that
acts the lead role that becomes the star
and the super star.
Marrying a virgin wife should never
constitute a sexual nuisance or a
challenge. Rather, the groom should
have a good, loving attitude towards his
bride. He should not make it mandatory
to have sex with her on the wedding
night nor exhibit all the expert methods
that same night. Even if the bride is not
a virgin, it is very possible that she may
not be an expert on bed if she has not
been exceptionally sexually active prior
to marriage.
Start your lovemaking with a relaxed
mind; do not look too serious. Just
make sure you do the right thing at the
right time. The groom should say
something sweet and romantic to his
wife before anything else as this will
relax her more. The same goes for the
bride; she should not appear as a saintly
prey and the man as the merciless
devourer. She should give her husband
a reassuring look of acceptance and
approval.
Help each other to undress and give
room for both of you to refresh
yourselves with a good bath. This is
necessary to calm you down after the
ordeal of the wedding ceremony you
have both gone through. The physical,
mental and spiritual exhaustion might
affect you negatively if not well
handled. It is, therefore, very important
to be in a relaxed mood and not
compulsorily focus your mind on sex for
the night; you still have all other nights
to yourselves. When you finally
commence, do not skip foreplay. You
don’t need to be in a hurry; remember
the wedding night is just the beginning
of a lifetime of sexual enjoyment
together.
After bathing, which you can have
together, change into something
comfortable and nice. The bride should
change into something sweet,
irresistible, transparent and seductive;
preferably a new lacy bra and undies
with a good body perfume. The bride
just has to smell very good. The groom
should change into good pyjamas and
make use of a good perfume and comb
his hair neatly. The choice of the room
should provide enough privacy and
create a romantic atmosphere. Switch
off extremely bright lights because dim
lights are more romantic with candle-
light. All these have a calming effect on
the new couple and help to remove any
anxiety and feeling of embarrassment.
Dark light is not sexually appealing at
all.
You both can then graduate into holding
of hands, staying closer and maintaining
good body contact. The body contact
should take a longer time in order to
enable the lady especially to be more
relaxed and prepared for the job ahead.
Then, lovingly undress each other. It is
needful for the newly wedded to
undress in front of each other since it
helps to quickly handle shyness. This is
very important and if done rightly, it
creates oneness. This, however, should
not be done in haste. As the undressing
goes on, hugging and kissing should also
come in gently and at intervals. After
removing one piece of dress, kissing and
hugging should follow before removing
the next piece. It is important not to
give room for embarrassment at all
because you are both now husband and
wife.
Then love-play should follow by
caressing each other’s upper body; for
the bride, the breasts most especially,
the nipples. The nipples should not be
roughly fondled but faintly touched as a
feather touches the skin; or on the
other hand, let the man use his tongue
gently on the breasts; it is very
stimulating and exciting. The lady should
let her husband know whenever he
does something that excites her; this
will encourage the woman to be more
relaxed and have a loving attitude
towards sex and her husband.
Knowing that he cares for her feeling
also is another boost. If a husband-to-be
has this mindset, I am certain that
having a virgin as a wife is worth the
bargain.
Sagbokoji boat tragedy: Eyewitnesses blame passing ship for victims’ deaths
Less than five minutes after a canoe
laden with ten passengers pulled out of
its dock at Apapa, Lagos on its way to
Sagbokoji Island around 8am
penultimate Tuesday, it was swallowed
by a massive wave.
The boat went under and only eight
people came back up.
When Saturday PUNCH visited
Sagbokoji, a fishing community, about 10
minutes from Apapa, on Wednesday,
the villagers said that the mishap was
caused by a small ship that had also
pulled out of its dock close to where the
canoe was.
A boat operator, who ferried our
correspondent to the community,
pointed out the point where the canoe
went under. It was close to a dock that
had been constructed by an oil company
to berth ships in the area.
“We have not recovered two bodies.
Maybe they will come up with the wave
later in the week,” the young operator,
who identified himself as Kingsley, said.
According to his account, his boat was
berthed at Sagbokoji’s dock as he
prepared to commence the day’s work
on Tuesday when the mishap occurred.
Kingsley said, “Anytime a big ship
passes by this area, it is always a
trouble for smaller boats like ours,
especially if it is speeding. The more a
ship speeds, the more it generates
waves.
“As the ship left its dock, the boat
which was already on its way to our
village was caught in the big wave that
the passing ship created. It turned over
and many of the passengers came up.
“We are not allowed to take more than
10 passengers. So, there is no doubt
that there were 10 passengers in the
ship. We saw the people in the boat in
the water. We knew what happened
immediately and had to put our boats in
the water and sped over to rescue the
passengers who were shouting in the
water.”
Saturday PUNCH observed that the
distance between the dock where the
boat took off and Sagbokoji was so short
that villagers could see the boats
berthed there.
But the boat operators, who effected
the rescue, said even though the
distance was short, they could not
succeed in rescuing all the victims as
some of them had drowned.
A boat operator also told Saturday
PUNCH that most of the victims floated
because of their life jackets.
He said, “Boat operators were just
coming out for business at the time.
The people in the boat that capsized
were traders going to Sagbokoji for their
daily business.
“There were some young children in the
boat. But I remember that we brought
out a young girl. I am not sure whether
the ones that drowned were also
children.
“Most of us operators can swim. When
we got to where the passengers were
floating in the water, we jumped in and
brought them into our boats and took
them ashore. We brought out about
eight of them. They later left by
themselves.”
When Saturday PUNCH spoke to the
Village Head of Sagbokoji, Chief Anthony
Ovime, he also affirmed that the victims
were traders who came to the
community to engage in petty trading.
“Some of them come to sell bread,
condiments and other things that the
villagers may not be able to access
unless they cross the water to Apapa.
“A boat mishap like this is strange in the
community. Why I am surprised that
some of the victims died is that every
boat operator here ensures that their
passengers use life jackets.
“I think their death might have to do
with the fact that the massive waves
generated by the ship incapacitated
them.”
But if the waves are massive and they
used life jacket, were they not supposed
to have floated, Saturday PUNCH asked.
A community leader in Sagbokoji, Mr.
Bernard Williams, later offered an
explanation, saying the quality of the
life jacket might have contributed to the
victims drowning.
Williams said, “The use of life jackets is
enforced here very well. You can verify
for yourself. We ensure that boat
operators have enough life jackets in
their boats and they are not allowed to
pick more than 10 passengers.
“But the problem is that the quality of
the life jackets may be why the missing
victims did not float like the rest.”
Asked if he knew any of the rescued
victims of the mishap in Sagbokoji,
William explained that the only victim
who resided in the community was a
Hausa man who had left with his
relations on Tuesday.
“I think he must have been coming from
his security guard work that morning.
But I heard he left with some of his
relations who came for him yesterday
(Tuesday).
On the journey to and fro Sagbokoji, our
correspondent was offered life jackets.
The operators said they don’t make the
jackets. They buy them from a company
which makes them in Apapa and assume
the quality is good.
Those who witnessed the mishap could
not provide a concrete description of
the ship which caused the wave that
made the boat to capsize.
How a small boat could be swallowed by
waves generated by a ship was
immediately evident on the return trip
as waves rocked the boat violently
anytime a yacht passed by.
Ovime and Williams, who were with our
correspondent in the boat, said they
were used to the waves but warned
that there was need for passing vessels
to be mindful of the lives of those in
smaller boats close by.
Williams said, “I am a sailor as well and
anytime I am in a ferry, I use the radio
to communicate with passing vessels to
slow down. Many of them speed even
though there are smaller boats around.
This is not supposed to be because they
endanger the lives of passengers.
“Water transport is the only means by
which we can get to our homes. If the
government cares about us and put a
couple of standard ferries here to
operate, why would we be afraid when a
ship passes by because we are in a
boat?”
Saturday PUNCH observed that there
was no ongoing search for the remains
of the missing victims, the operators
said they were waiting for the bodies to
float.
Williams informed our correspondent
two days later (Thursday) that the body
of a girl of about estimated to be about
10 years old had been found floating in
the water.
The punch.

Shekau named 9th most dangerous global terrorist
Leader of the Boko Haram Islamic sect,
Abubakar Shekau, has been named the
ninth most dangerous terrorist in the
world by a compilation published by
CNN.
Shekau is one of the three Africans on
the list, which is topped by al Qaeda
leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri.
The other Africans on the list are
Somalian Al Shabaab’s leader, Ahmed
Abdi Godane, who comes at number 4
and Algerian, Moktar Belmoktar, who
heads a group called ‘Those Who Sign
With Blood’. A three-day siege on an
Algerian gas plant in January 2013 by his
fighters left nearly 40 foreign workers
dead.
The US named Shekau a Specially
Designated Global Terrorist in June
2012.
The Boko Haram leader comes behind
Sirajudin Haqqani whose Haqqani
Network, was said to be responsible for
some of the deadly attacks in Kabul,
Afghanistan.
The US government has offered up to
$7m (N1.08bn) for any information that
will reveal the location of Shekau.

Today is International day of the Girl Child. ***How do u treat the female folks?***
International Day of the Girl
Child is an international
observance day declared by the
United Nations . October 11 ,
2012, was the first Day of the
Girl. The observation supports
more opportunity for girls, and
increases awareness of inequality
faced by girls worldwide based
upon their gender. This inequality
includes areas such as access to
education, nutrition, legal rights,
medical care, and protection
from discrimination , violence and
unfree child marriage.
"I Must Marry' - Written by Charly Boy
Wanting so badly to get hooked is
something many people seem to
take far too lightly and for
granted these days. Something
some of them feel they should do
to win acceptance from people
and society. These days’ people
look at the package and never the
content, forgetting that marriage
should be a life time commitment
of two strangers. In some cases
the marriage may workout, like,
Charles and Diane, Tunde and
Wummie. But most of the time it
falls like a park of cards, because
as people are rushing to get in,
people are rushing to get out, at
an alarming rate. Kai!!
These days break ups and divorce
has become the trend as soon as
the honey Moon is over. People
use to think that divorce rate is
only high amongst celebrities, but
now, across board, couples are
falling asunder, going under the
pressure of a very bad decision ,
just because they Must Marry.
In these hard times, people are blowing
and burning pots of money on very
fancy weddings that really don't last
after the honey moon. In this age,
some parents still pressure their
daughters in getting married early. It's
like, once your girl crosses the 30yrs
bracket, they start to panic, getting
anxious and putting pressure on their
girl to get married, like it is that easy.
She just can't go to the market and buy
a husband, or can she? When the poor
girl insists on finding her dream man,
she is accused of being unserious.
Parents please learn to back off joor, it's
not by force. After all, are they the
ones who will leave with the spouse?
There is nothing wrong with waiting for
the right person, because if it is the
razzmatazz of the wedding things that
you enjoy, go ahead and throw yourself
a big nonstop party for a whole week.
After all, weddings are just one day
event, but a marriage is supposed to be
a life time thing. I know that weddings
are fun, romantic and you can finally tell
your girlfriends, boyfriends or your
sugar daddy's that you have finally
captured your own ‘mugu’. But has this
guy been tried and tested? Dating and
courting is a different matter from ‘Till
Death Do You Part’. Living with one
human being for the rest of your life.
My sister look the thing well oooo.
Bebe, do you have an idea how your
guy functions in rough weather? When
reality bites, is he calm or does he freak
out? Do you share the same interest in
some things? Bebe, before you rush
into this marriage, it is important to
learn where your partner stands on the
bigger issues of your life together. Do
you have the same values? Sit him
down and have a long talk about these
and other issues that are of importance
to you, you may discover that chances
of a long lasting marriage could be
slimmer; women are intuitively wired to
pick up these things. Are you a learner?
For me, I got hooked up with a woman
I never saw coming and a woman I will
never let go. When I met my wife, she
was not even a girlfriend or a lover. I
liked her physically, because she had
and still have curves that men would die
for, but she was never my idea of a
wife. She kept hanging around like
other beautiful women around me; it
was more or less a platonic relationship.
All the time I didn't know I was under
the microscope of the FBI and the CIA.
She was to tell me all this after our
marriage. Even though we dated for
about 3yrs, in my wildest dream I never
saw her coming till one morning after
sleeping over, she woke me up, looked
me straight into my sleepy eyes and
demanded that I marry her in the next
few days or she will leave me. Wow!
Before then, no one ever threatened
me like that, no one ever gave me
ultimatums. Who born them? Me
CharlyBoy? Little did I know that this
woman for years has been doing
research on me, this woman has seen
me ‘finish’, figured out how to arrest
and deal with me. When I was much
younger, I had a very violent temper, I
was obnoxious. And she had witnessed
me a few times in my rage with other
women. "Ain't you afraid that I will hurt
or harm you" to that she answered,
"you can never hurt or harm me
because I will never give you a reason
to" hummmmmm!!! Oh! See finish.
Bebe, it's easy to know what you are
getting into. If in doubt, investigate, set
exams for the guy. I believe women are
emotionally smarter than men. You
must know who you want to marry, it's
important for your happiness. You don't
deserve scrap especially if you are
hardworking, intelligent, progressive
and forward looking. Investigate him
from all angles, don't be in a rush joor.
You don't deserve that heartache
because the way marriages are crashing,
it's making me catch cold.
With the way things are going, very
soon we will be throwing divorce parties
and inviting friends and well-wishers to
celebrate divorce anniversaries. They
will choose asoebe, hire a big hall, with
Dbanj as the entertainer and Julius Agu
as the MC. Even questions like, "when
are you getting your divorce" will be
the buzz.
So if you know you can't handle the
pressure, remain single. If the man is
still under investigation, please take
your time, don't rush. If you know that
you are too horny to be faithful, biko
remain single and have a ball. If you
can't endure bad weather from time to
time, stay in your father’s house joor.
Never get married out of desperation or
because other people are getting
married. If you want a beautiful home,
like mine, examine your choice of a life
partner, there are a lot of gigolos out
there preying on desperate babes like
you. But show them say you pass
them. No be you?
Asari-Dokubo establishes university, names it after King Amachree
According to new reports, former Niger
Delta militant and current leader of the
Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force,
Asari Dokubo, is now a proud owner of a
university in Benin Republic...
From Premium Times
The leader of the Niger Delta
People’s Volunteer Force, NDPVF,
Muhajid Asari-Dokubo has joined
the swelling rank of private
university proprietors with his
establishment of a university in
the neighbouring Republic of
Benin.
Mr. Asari-Dokubo, who already
owns a soccer academy in the
West African country and another
one in Abuja, said the university,
which will be known as King
Amachree African University,
KAAU, had already been
accredited to commence degree
programmes beginning
September 2014.
He told PREMIUM TIMES in an interview
in Abuja that the proposed university,
named after his ancestor, was a product
of his two existing institutions in Benin
Republic, namely King Amachree
Automobile/ICT Royal Academy and
King Amachree Arts Academy. Both of
them, he added, currently award
Diploma to their students.
Mr. Asari-Dokubo said he chose to
establish the institutions in Benin
Republic because he does not only live
there, but has adopted it as his
country.
“What we have now, we are awarding
only diploma now. “By next September,
Insha Allah, the university will start,”
Mr. Asari-Dokubo, who dropped out of
University of Calabar, he said.
“For now we have King Amachree
Automobile/ICT Royal Academy and
King Amachree Arts Academy. Two of
them were merged. We have merged
the two of them into king Amachree
African University.
“King Amachree is my great ancestor.
He was king of the Kingdom of new
Calabar.”
On his soccer academy, the 50 year old
Mr. Asari-Dokubo, an indigene of Rivers
State, who refused to be tagged a
former militant, said it was established
to train the youth in soccer free of
charge.
“We plan to engage the youths. It is
free. We have a soccer academy in
Abuja and we have another one in
Republic of Benin,” he said.
More Nigerians are forced to go to
Benin Republic, Ghana, Togo and other
neigbhouring countries to acquire
education due to the incessant labour
disputes and industrial actions within
the Nigerian university system as well
as the deplorable state of education in
the country.
Currently, students of both the federal
and state universities in Nigeria are at
home due to the strike embarked upon
by the Academic Staff Union of
Universities, ASUU, over the refusal of
the Federal Government to honour its
2009 agreement with the union.
Other unions within the education
sector, including the Senior Staff
Association of Nigerian Universities,
SSANU, have also embarked on
solidarity strike while the Nigeria Union
of Teachers, NUT, and Non-Academic
Staff Union, NASU, are reportedly on
the verge of doing towing that path.
Students of the over 50 private
universities in Nigeria, whose fees can
only be afforded the rich, are however,
in session.
Mr. Asari-Dokubo is, like former Niger
Delta militants enjoying massive
patronage from the current
administration, believe to be very
wealthy but his source of income is
largely unknown.
There were speculation he made his
fortune stealing crude oil in the Niger
Delta. But he denied engaging in such
practices, telling PREMIUM TIMES he

Today is International day of the Girl Child. ***How do u treat the female folks?***
International Day of the Girl
Child is an international
observance day declared by the
United Nations . October 11 ,
2012, was the first Day of the
Girl. The observation supports
more opportunity for girls, and
increases awareness of inequality
faced by girls worldwide based
upon their gender. This inequality
includes areas such as access to
education, nutrition, legal rights,
medical care, and protection
from discrimination , violence and
unfree child marriage.
Qualifying exams for aspiring school principals
The Supervising Minister of Education,
Chief Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, recently
disclosed that all applicants seeking
appointment as principals of Unity Schools
will henceforth take compulsory qualifying
examinations to establish their
competence and managerial skills before
they are appointed.
While we appreciate the need to
determine the competence of teachers
who have put in many years of service
before they are promoted to the office of
principal, it is pertinent to ask the
following questions: Has the Ministry of
Education been training teachers in its
employ on managerial skills in which it
intends to examine those aspiring to
become principals? If this is not the case,
will the ministry arrange courses on
managerial skills for the aspiring principals
before they are examined? Or, are they to
be examined on educational
administration theories learnt in the
universities probably 15 to 20 years
earlier? What is the guarantee that the
examinations would not be politicized by
the corrupt civil service bureaucracy that
selfishly undermines lofty policies?
We ask these questions because of the
possibility of the manipulation of this
new examination requirement to
undermine seniority and other current
criteria used to determine the selection
of principals, to promote less qualified
persons on political and other
considerations.
We do not, to all intents and purposes,
see the exigency for this evaluative test
at this time that the educational sector is
in dire straits. The least of our needs now
is the conduct of pre-appointment
examinations for potential Unity School
principals. What should be on the front
burner at this time is the lingering strike
by members of the Academic Staff Union
of Universities (ASUU) and other
imminent work stoppages by some
educational associations such as the
Senior Staff Association of Nigerian
Universities (SSANU) and the Colleges of
Education Association of Staff Unions. The
implication of all these strikes and threats
of strikes is that there may be paralysis of
education in the country in the weeks
ahead if there is no urgent intervention to
stem the trend.
The minister should be thinking of quick
solutions to these problems to end the
disenchantment that appears to have
engulfed the entire teaching and learning
process at the tertiary education level.
This is more important than any novel
tests for aspiring Unity School principals.
Nigeria cannot leave basic challenges in
the education sector and be trifling with
esoteric ideas that can have no impact on
the glaring problems staring the sector in
the face. Once we get our educational
aspirations and plans right, other
tangential things will naturally fall in
place. The administration, funding and
autonomy of citadels of learning must be
addressed squarely before we can begin
to talk of other associated issues that are
not as fundamental as the current
contentions.
There is no doubt that principals, like
professionals in other callings, need
honing of skills and updating of their
management proficiency, but it must be a
deliberate, planned and sustainable
package that will ultimately improve their
competence and rub off on the entire
system.
We advise the education authorities to
make training and upgrading of the skills
of teachers and educational
administrators a regular exercise. If any
deficiencies have been noticed in the
present crop of Unity School principals,
the ministry should arrange re-training
and refresher courses for them, to keep
them abreast of latest developments in
their field. Those who are found to be
irredeemably incompetent should be
relieved of the office.
The plan to subject aspiring principals to
examinations gives the impression that
the potential principals do not have any
idea about these professional issues. That
is utterly wrong because the aspirants to
that office are mostly university graduates
with qualifications in education who have,
in most cases, worked for about 15 years
as school teachers, and would have been
subjected to annual assessments over the
years which could be used to determine
their suitability for the office in question.
In his capacity as the supervising Minister
of Education, Wike should enhance efforts
aimed at getting ASUU members back to
work. That is the greatest challenge facing
the country now because the elongation
of the strike by university teachers has
the capacity to undermine the
developmental efforts of this government
and expose parents, guardians, their
children and wards to concomitant
dangers that trail this kind of disruption of
academic studies. It is unacceptable that
ASUU has been on strike since July 1,
2013! The socio-economic implications of
this instability are too far-reaching. An
amicable solution must be found to this
problem immediately.
Let Wike address this serious problem
before propounding utopian theories on
the selection of school principals. We
cannot be chasing shadows and toying
with weird propositions like examinations
for principals of Unity Schools when there
are burning issues calling for urgent
attention in the education sector.
BREAKING NEWS ON ASUU STRKIE***
ASUU STRIKE LATEST: The Federal
Government has resolved to stop the
salaries of protesting universities lecturers
over the ongoing strike of the its Academic
body, ASUU.
The decision to invoke the “no work, no
pay” rule was said to have been officially
taken yesterday, even though some
universities had earlier complained of no
salaries since August.
It was gathered that the government has
passed a directive to the various
universities governing councils to stop
payment of salaries of the striking lecturers
forthwith.
The ASUU Zonal Chairman in Abuja, Mr
Clement Chup confirmed the development
yesterday after a zonal conference of
ASUU, University of Abuja chapter, which
took place at the Gwagwalada campus to
review the nationwide strike.
He said his colleagues were yet to receive
their September salaries.
According to him, “we have resorted to
other welfare strategies to cope with the
effect of the strike, particularly to contain
the various attempts by government to
break the resolve
of the union.
“Part of the welfare strategy, involved
distributing food items, giving out soft
loans and cash advances to members.”
He urged members of the public to ignore
the rumour that the strike has been called
off.
He said: “Nigerians should disregard
rumours making the rounds that the three
months old
strike has been called off”, adding that
“the strike continues until the government
demonstrates a positive inclination towards
implementing the 2009 agreements and
the 2012 Memorandum of Understanding
signed by both parties.”

Associated crash: UK insurance team visits Nigeria
Some representatives of the insurance
giant, Lloyd of London, arrived in Nigeria
on Wednesday to work with
stakeholders in the aviation sector
following last Thursday’s plane crash
involving an Associated Airlines’ aircraft.
The team, which came from Blake
Group, a United Kingdom crisis
management firm, said it came to see
things in view of the controversy
surrounding the insurance policy on the
aircraft.
A source close to the Nigerian Civil
Aviation Authority said the team was
also in the country to work with the
airline and families that lost their
relatives in the crash.
The source, who chose not to be named,
said the representatives visited the
office of the Accident Investigation and
Prevention Bureau, the crash site, the
NCAA office and the Lagos State
University Teaching Hospital to see the
survivors.
The source added that the
representatives of the insurance giant
also inspected the wreckage of the
aircraft at the site of the accident.
On the allegation that the embattled
airline had no insurance policy, the
source said the airline took the policy
directly from the insurance giant, adding
that this led to insinuation that the
airline had no insurance policy.
Meanwhile, the Federal Airports
Authority of Nigeria has called on
Nigerians not to politicise the crash,
which has so far claimed the lives of 15
persons.
FAAN, in a statement on Wednesday,
said rather than attack the government
and its parastatals over the crash,
eminent Nigerians, especially politicians,
should offer constructive support on
how the issues could be addressed.
The General Manager, Corporate
Communications, FAAN, Mr. Yakubu
Dati, who made the call, said that
political leaders in other parts of the
world would not use such situation to
discredit the government.
He said instead, such people identified
with the government and gave their
support in ensuring positive changes.
He observed in the statement that since
the unfortunate crash of the 120
Embraer aircraft, opposition leaders had
thrown caution to the wind to exploit
the sad incident for political gains.
He said, “Perhaps it is important to look
at the most recent case of tragedy in
Kenya, East-Africa. Recently, when
Kenya was faced with one of the worst
hostage crises the country had ever
seen, the fervour towards unity and the
patriotism exhibited by Kenyans was
one never seen before.
“At periods of great trials, statesmen
stand out; it is high time we learnt from
Kenya.
“The change we are making will take
some time to unsettle the many years
of lopsided and inefficient policies and
actions which have brought us to where
we are today.”
Dati remarked that it was no secret that
the Nigerian aviation sector was left to a
cascading decline, until the present
leadership of the Aviation Minister,
Stella Oduah, embarked on a rescue
operation two years ago.
He said it was the determination of the
present government to ensure that the
country did not record any more
accident as the policy laid on ground
would soon start yielding results.
He said, “If you check world aviation
statistics, in the last three months,
there have been 100 emergency
landings all over the world. South Africa
alone has recorded 37 emergency
landings with about 25 deaths in less
than 12 months. But they involved
unscheduled aircraft.”
Made-in-Nigeria phones to be introduced —PAPDAN
The Phone and Allied Products Dealers
Association of Nigeria on Wednesday
said that plans were underway to
introduce two new made-in-Nigeria
mobile phone brands before December.
The President, PAPDAN, Mr. Godfrey
Nwosu, told the News Agency of Nigeria
in Lagos that the proposed phones, iQ
and MaxTel, resulted from a partnership
involving 20 Nigerian investors.
“The two new phone brands would be
called iQ and MaxTel,” he said.
Nwosu said PAPDAN had identified a
growing appetite for cutting-edge
technologies among telecoms
consumers.
“The two Nigerian brands would cater to
three market segments: feature,
medium and smart phone segments,”
he said.
Nwosu said the phones would offer
more choices to the local consumers.
The PAPDAN official also said that
membership of the association currently
stood at 3,000.
“Our members occupy a crucial place in
the retail end of the technology market.
“As they sell in excess of 2 million units
of phones and allied devices in Nigeria
and several economies across West
Africa monthly,” Nwosu said.

How Flavour & Emeka Morgan abandoned MC Loph's mum' -Bianka Johnson writes..
Like all one-sided stories/write-ups,
please read with an open mind. Bianka
Johnson, who is kinda in the movie
industry, today sent out something she
wrote about how high life crooner
Flavour and Morgan Ent. CEO Emeka
Morgan, supposedly abandoned MC
Loph's mother (pictured above with
Bianca) after her son died in a tragic
accident in 2011. Flavour and MC Loph
were childhood friends while Emeka
Morgan is the CEO of the record label
MC Loph was signed to before his tragic
passing. Find Bianca's write up below...
My name is Bianka Johnson, I
reside in the United States of
America. I am from Nigeria, a
healthcare practitioner, actors-
manager and a goodwill citizen.
Flavour Nabania didn't make a
tribute song "Iwe", he made a
mockery of his friend, the late
McLoph. Below is my story.
Tragedy brought us together....
That's how I came to know Mrs.
Nwaozor, affectionately known to
me as "Mama." Back in November
2011, someone posted a tribute
video, "Iwe", by Flavor, on
Facebook. On that day I distinctly
remember viewing the video on
YouTube and sobbing for over an
hour after watching this video that
paid homage to two siblings who
so suddenly lost their lives. I was
simply paralyzed thinking about
the magnitude of grief one
particular mother would have to
endure. You see, Mama was the
mother who lost those two adult
children on the same day,
specifically, a son, the erstwhile
entertainer, MC Loph, and a
daughter, Chinwe.
Continue, it gets more interesting...
All I could think to myself is that life as
we know it is so unfair. My spirit was
disturbed and something, I don't know
what it was, moved within me and I set
out to find this woman. It became my
duty....my obligation, to find her, to
hug her and give her some semblance
of hope and maybe a little peace, if she
would allow me to.
So, I began to search for Mama. The
first thing I did was to call Flavor's
promoter, Igwe, who I knew was based
in Houston, Texas. I asked to speak
with Flavor and he informed me that
Flavor had gone to the mall, but he
would make sure Flavor would call me
immediately he got back. At the time,
Flavor was in the United States
promoting the album he had recently
released. The next day Igwe called me
and put Flavor on the phone. I briefly
introduced myself and went straight to
thank him for showing love through his
tribute song to a dear friend who had
lost his life. Shortly after that, I
expressed to him how his video moved
me to tears and how I felt compelled to
find Loph's mother. Flavor thanked me
as well and gave me a telephone
number to MC Loph's close friend in
Lagos who went by the name Obi
Mgbakor. There was absolutely no
doubt in my mind that Flavor was in
contact with Mama on a weekly, or at
least, a monthly basis seeing as the late
MC Loph and Flavor were childhood
friends that grew up together. Without
hesitation, I immediately called Obi
Mgbakor in Lagos and introduced myself
to him and requested Mama's contact
information. Obi Mgbakor was guarded
at first and was reluctant to give me
Mama's number. He asked for my
Facebook name so he could check out
my profile. Without giving it a second
thought, I provided it to him and his
countenance changed after he was able
to verify who I was and he even
requested my friendship on Facebook.
Obi Mgbakor gave me Mama's
information and I contacted her the
next day and introduced myself. Mama
and I spent almost an hour on the
phone the first time we spoke and she
narrated so much to me. Mama was
heartbroken and she said that she was
actually shocked Flavor was the one
that made it possible for us to start
communicating. Mama went further to
express her disappointment over
Flavor's nonchalant attitude since the
death of her son, MC Loph and her
daughter Chinwe. "Flavor has not
picked up the phone to call me since
Obiajulu passed away, yet he made a hit
tribute song on his behalf. May God be
the judge," Mama said.
Now, it must be noted that MC Loph
died in a ghastly motor accident on
September 14, 2011, while traveling on
the Benin/Ore expressway to visit
Mama with his pregnant fiancé Nkiru,
who survived the ordeal. The phone
conversation I had with Mama was in
November 2011, two months after MC
Loph's death and she said Flavor hadn't
called? Unbelievable!
Immediately I got off the phone with
Mama I called Obi Mgbakor to verify
what she told me. The whole thing was
strange to me and I couldn't reconcile
the feelings and emotions Flavor
expressed in his tribute video with the
nonchalant attitude he had towards his
best friend's mother. Obi Mgbakor
indeed confirmed that Flavor refused to
call or visit mama after McLoph's death.
Right now, I want to set the record
straight. Since the death of Mama's son,
MC Loph, Flavor Nabania never called
nor visited Mama and he never sent a
dime to her for her upkeep. Flavor
hasn't made any effort to reach out to
Nkiru or MC Loph's infant son. Mama
died from congestive heart failure
exacerbated by heartbreak. But for the
deaths of her two adult childrenat the
same time, which took an enormous
toll on her health, it is my belief that
Mama would have lived longer. Since
her death, I have read so many untrue
stories including a statement made by
MC Loph's former manager, Emeka
Morgan. Once again, let me set the
record straight: Mr. Morgan was never
responsible for Mama's upkeep. He
claimed that his record label was
sending Mama thirty thousand naira a
month. Mama never received thirty
thousand Naira monthly from the
record label and Mr Morgan never
adopted MC Loph's son nor was he
responsible for the infant's welfare as
speculated by some brainless human
beings. Mr. Morgan abandoned Mama
as soon as the media attention
surrounding her son's death died off.
Mr. Morgan till date has yet to call
Nkiru, MC Loph's fiancé, to say
congratulations on the birth of Loph's
son.
It is my honest belief that God brought
me close to Mama after her son's death
for reasons beyond my comprehension.
I took care of Mama until she died to
the best of my ability. Today, I am
blessed to have an extra angel watching
over me. She lost two children at the
same time who can never be replaced
but before she died, Mama gained a
grandson, a beautiful daughter in-law in
Nkiru, and a daughter in me. Mama is
gone, reunited with her children and I
know she is at peace now. Mama will be
buried on November 12, 2013. May her
very gentle soul rest in peace.
Boy,9, becomes Nigeria’s youngest Microsoft certified professional
A primary six pupil of Role Model
School, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos, has
emerged one of the youngest pupils to
obtain the Microsoft Certified
Professional certificate, SAMUEL
AWOYINFA reports
A nine-year-old pupil of Role Model
School, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos, Jomiloju
Tunde-Oladipo, has emerged the
youngest Nigerian Microsoft certified
professional.
He came tops among 21 pupils who sat
for the professional examination in
Lagos.
He is now a Microsoft office specialist in
office word 2010.
Jomiloju scored 769 out of 1,000 in the
examination held in August.
In his examination score report, the
slim-built boy performed well in Sharing
and Maintaining Documents, Formatting
Content, Applying Page Layout, and
Reusable Content, among other
subjects.
By the feat, Jomiloju has joined the
league of young Microsoft certified
professionals, including Nigeria’s 10-
year-old Anjolaoluwa Seyi-Ojo; an
eight-year-old Indian, Lavishnashree,
and two Pakistanis, named Arfa and
Thobani.
Microsoft Certified Professional is a
certification programme provided by
Microsoft Corporation. The certification
is tailored towards building skills on
Microsoft business solutions, focusing on
client-end operating systems such as
windows XP, Vista, Windows7 among
others.
Jomiloju, whose certificate was signed
by the Chief Executive Officer, Microsoft
Corporation, Steven Ballmer, says he did
not achieve this feat easily, but through
persistence and hard work.
He says, “It was not all that easy,
because I had attempted the
examination last year, I did not make it
then. But I remained focused and I put
in a lot of hard work.
“At home and in the school, I am always
on the computer. After school hours, if
am not doing anything, I will go to my
Information Communication Technology
teacher, to learn more.”
Jomiloju sat for the examination when
he was in primary Five.
Relating his experience, Jomiloju says,
“In all, I answered 20 questions, after
answering a question, the computer
takes you to another one. And at times,
there will be an instruction to skip the
next question. But the programme still
directs one to come back to those
questions one had earlier skipped.”
But was he really scared having failed
once to meet the cut off mark? He
stresses that he was really afraid due to
his earlier experience but he was
optimistic of having success, because
according to him, he has prepared well.
He also gives kudos to his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Tunde-Ladipo, for their
support and imbuing in him the ‘can do’
spirit in achieving the success.
He says, “My mum and dad were very
supportive. They always tell me never
to give up and eventually it paid off.
Moreover, they had bought the latest
Dell laptop. Again, I am always
fascinated about computer. The way it
works and the process, and the way it
organises data.”
Jomiloju who is a left-handed writer,
according to his parents, has been a
gifted child. He has always been in love
with gadgets. His mum, Toyin, says,
“Jomiloju since he was baby had loved
playing with gadgets, he was never
interested in toys. He would pick up
remote controls for both TV and air-
conditioner, and he would correctly use
them for their specific functions.”
His father adds, “It is not that we are
unnecessarily indulging him but he is
such a brilliant child. He’s multi-
talented. He plays the saxophone, he’s
good on keyboard, he acts very well and
he’s a good swimmer.
“Each term, he participates in school
drama and quiz. He also gets prizes in
other subjects, apart from ICT.”
Does Jomiloju want to pursue a career in
software/hardware project like Bill
Gates and Steve Job? Spotting an
innocent smile, the youngster nods his
head in affirmative.
His school administrator, Mrs. Adesimbo
Banjo, who speaks glowingly about
Jomiloju, says the feat recorded by her
pupil is a tonic for other pupils.
His ICT teacher, Mr. Mathew Alo, also
commends Jomiloju for the feat.
He adds, “Jomiloju was taught all the
necessary things he needed to know and
he came out as the most outstanding
among 20 others from different schools
in Lagos.
His class teacher, Mrs. Elizabeth
Ogunrinola, says Jomiloju takes his
studies seriously. She states, “He is not
only good in ICT, but in other subjects.
He is hard working and well behaved.”
For Jomiloju, he’s not resting on his oars
yet, as he says he is still going to seek
more Microsoft certifications.
“I still want to sit for more
examinations. I will still do excel and
power points,” he says.
Seven-year-old leads police to smash Lagos kidnap syndicate
According to a report by Punch , a 7year
old boy led police to the smash of a
Lagos kidnap syndicate that specializes
in the kidnap of little children, weeks
after he was kidnapped and released by
them...
Punch reports
A university graduate and two
other suspects were on
Wednesday paraded by the Lagos
State Police Command, following
their arrest, by a tip off from a
seven-year-old victim.
The graduate of Economics of
Olabisi Onabanjo University,
Gbenga Sholaja; Olalekan
Benjamin and Samson Shomorin,
who specialise in kidnapping little
boys, were arrested by men of
the Igando Police Division and the
Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja,
Lagos.
The victim (name withheld) was
said to have been held hostage at
Benjamin’s father’s house at
Ikotun, Lagos.
The child, who was later released
after ransom was paid by his
parents, was said to have
memorised the house address
where he was kept. It was the
child who led police officers to the
same house where Benjamin was
arrested.
Sholaja, who wept profusely during his
interview, told PUNCH Metro that he
was pushed by unemployment into
kidnapping. He said, “I have a Second
Class Upper (Division) in Accounting and
have completed my National Youth
Service Corps programme.
“I went into kidnapping because since I
finished my NYSC in 2011, I have been
unable to get a job.”
An ex-convict, who was remanded in
prison for kidnapping three years ago,
Benjamin, said he met Sholaja at OOU
while he was trying to gain admission
into the school.
He said, “I was a casual worker at a
factory in 2007 before I was sacked; I
earned N300 per day. After staying idle
for some months, I met a friend,
Muyiwa, we were carriers of frozen fish
at Apapa. He introduced me to Taofeeq.
“One day, Taofeeq brought a small boy
to my house and asked me to take care
of him. He claimed that the boy was his
younger brother; he was about seven
years old. The boy stayed in my house
with my family and was well taken care
of for four days. Taofeeq even sent
money for his upkeep.
“When Taofeeq went to collect N150,
000 ransom, he was arrested by SARS
and he led them to my house. We were
charged and sent to prison in November
2009. In September 2010, we were
released because the complainant
refused to show up in court.”
Benajmin and his wife, upon his release,
then moved to his father’s house at
Ikotun area of the state. In 2010, he
was said to have met Sholaja in OOU,
where he went to write the post-
Unified Tertiary Matriculation
Examination.
The 30-year-old claimed that Sholaja
invited him to take part in another
kidnapping; he said Sholaja had read
about Benjamin’s arrest in the
newspapers.
Benjamin said, “We would kidnap one
boy and we would keep the boy in his
(Sholaja’) mother’s house at Owode
Ijako.
“After a week, the boy’s parents paid
the money. We were given N100,000
and my share was just N40,000.”
Describing their modus operandi,
Benajmin said they usually kidnapped
children while on their way to or from
school. All suspects were said to have
collected a total of N260,000 on two
separate occasions, to secure the
release of two boys.
Benjamin told PUNCH Metro that he
befriended potential victims by buying
them biscuits on their way to school,
thereby earning their trust.
He said, “It was the last kidnap that got
us into trouble. I drove away not
knowing that the boy memorised my
father’s house address, where he was
kept.
“After he was released, he led
policemen to the house and I was
arrested along with my dad but my dad
was later released on bail.”
Shomorin, on his part, confessed to
kidnapping three boys. He urged the
government to pardon them, promising
not to go back to crime.
Lagos Deputy Police Public Relations
Officer, Damasus Ozoani, said the
suspects were arrested on September
29, 2013.
Ozoani said, “They confessed to have
kidnapped three children -one from
Omole Phase 1; one Kola at Alagbado
area and the last one in Owode Ijako,
Ogun State, and various amounts of
money were collected as ransom.”
I’d love to marry Genevieve –D’banj
Dapo Oyebanji, aka D’banj, speaks with
JAYNE AUGOYE about his career and
relationship with the popular Nollywood
actress
Singer, Dapo Oyebanji, aka D’banj, finally
opened up on his love life in a rare
meeting with journalists in Lagos on
Wednesday.
The self-styled Kokomaster was clearly
in his elements as he talked at length,
amid occasional bouts of laughter, about
his career and other issues that were
important to him. One of the subjects
was about his rumoured relationship
with Nollywood actress, Genevieve
Nnaji.
Judging by the manner in which the
actress’ name kept popping off his lips,
it was obvious that D’banj had a very
soft spot for her.
Aware that the grapevine had bristled
with the rumour that he was
romantically involved with Genevieve,
ever since she appeared in the 2010
video of his hit song, ‘Fall in Love’, the
singer said the actress had played a role
in his success.
“Apart from the fact that she is my
friend, she has been a part of my
success. There is no way you are going
to tell my story that Genevieve’s name
will not come up because she featured
in my biggest song of all time, Fall in
Love. So if E True Story comes to Nigeria
to interview me, she will definitely be
called upon to tell my story,” he said.
As if to confirm that there was more to
his relationship with the actress than he
had always admitted, D’banj added, “I
would love to have Genevieve as my
wife. We never can tell what God plans
for us in the future. I have studied her
and I realised that anyone that has her
as his woman has found himself a
treasure. Just like the Bible says, any
man who finds a wife, finds a good
thing.”
Perhaps the fans and admirers of the
‘love birds’ will have to brace
themselves for a symbolic wedding of
two of the most celebrated artistes on
this side of the globe in the nearest
future.
Meanwhile, D’banj plans to celebrate
the 10th anniversary of his music career
anytime in 2014. As expected, the
singer aims to roll out the proverbial
drums to celebrate in style what he
describes as the overwhelming success
of his foray into the Nigerian music
scene.
The one-time harmonica wielding artiste
has, indeed, made tremendous progress
in his career since his monster hit,
‘Tongolo’ was released in 2004.
The artiste, who wormed his way into
the highly competitive international
music market after signing on to Kanye
West’s G.O.O.D Music in 2011, no
doubt, has finally found his bearing as an
entertainer since he parted ways with
Mo’Hits.
“So much has happened in the last 18
months and I am very thankful to God.
By the Grace of God, I have remained
relevant for nearly a decade in the
music industry and I have released hit
songs every year. Also, I am glad that I
have been chosen to headline the
Hennessy Artistry this year. This is one
brand that understands the importance
of aligning with the entertainment
industry.
“My career is barely 10 years old.
But with the success I have
achieved so far, it feels like three
decades already. Within my first 10
years as a musician, I have recorded the
biggest song and shot the most viewed
music video of all time, ‘Oliver Twist’. I
must say I am humbled and getting
ready to take over,” he said.
Without mincing words, D’banj noted
that the history of his career and the
resulting accomplishments will be
incomplete without mentioning his
humble beginning with the defunct
Mo’Hits Records. The mere mention of
his erstwhile colleagues, including Don
Jazzy, seemed to awaken nostalgic
feelings in him.
“If I say I don’t miss Don Jazzy, I am
lying. I have spent the better part of my
career with him. I was married to him
in a way (laughs). So I miss everything
about Mo’Hits: the family, the
movement, and the vibe of being in the
studio with him. I miss the jokes and
the arguments, but I have since keyed
into the notion that nothing can stop a
moving train.
“Nevertheless we can always do music
together. The track, ‘Top of the World’
was produced by a Grammy Award
Winner. The songs ‘Finally’ and ‘Don’t
Tell Me Nonsense’ was produced by my
producer while ‘Oliver Twist’ was
produced by Don Jazzy. So, why won’t I
have him on my 10 years anniversary
album?
“I have never said I am a musician; I am
an entertainer. Some people say I can
pick up a microphone and become a
comedian. Therefore nobody should
come and ask if I want to go into acting
because they should know I am already
an actor. It depends on when the right
script and concept lands in my hands.
“For now, I am concerned about
achieving new things and breaking new
grounds. By the time I enter Hollywood,
I believe that I’ll become as successful
as I have been as a singer. The movie
titled ‘I am Banga Lee’, starring
Genevieve, to be released in 2014,
won’t be a bad idea,” He said.
It seems that the world is at the
Kokomaster’s feet. Yet, he is not in
denial of the fact that his fans in Nigeria
are his greatest assets.
“The Hennessey Artistry Tour afforded
me the opportunity to meet my fans
here in Nigeria. I have not travelled
across the country in a long while
because I am abroad all the time. Most
of my fans complained that they have
not seen me since 2007 and I reallised
that I need to be in constant touch with
my fans down here.”

Strike by resident doctors unwarranted – FG
The Federal Government on Monday
said the strike declared by the National
Association of Resident Doctors was
unwarranted.
Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi
Chukwu, said this while speaking to
journalists during the opening ceremony
of a retreat organised for chairmen of
boards of management, governing
boards, governing councils, Chief
Executive Officers and Directors of
Administration of tertiary hospitals and
parastatals in Abuja.
Chukwu said, “The strike by Resident
Doctors was uncalled for because we
were already handling the issues after
our meeting with the Nigerian Medical
Association. I still remember that the
NMA gave us an ultimatum to look
atcertain issues and we had a very long
meeting with the NMA and indeed
NARD participated in that meeting.
“There is a committee being chaired by
Head of Civil Service of the Federation
in which the NMA, including NARD, are
well represented. These are the same
matters being handled; so there are
persons already in a committee handling
those issues and they should have
exercised some patience.
“We understand that some of the issues
have not been resolved but I thinkwe
can do well and exercise some patience
before going on strike because when we
go on strike, peoples’ lives are
involved.”
Asked whether the strike was politically
motivated, the minister answered in
the negative.
“For now, I don’t see it as politically-
motivated; I see it as Resident Doctors
getting restive. But we are appealing to
them to really calm down and exercise
some patience; it will all be resolved”,
he said.
The Minister directed that hospitals
owing workers should compile the
number of months they are owing
House Officers for onward transfer to
the Directors in charge of
administration.
There had been indications that NARD
would call off its five-day old strike
onMonday following the reported
success of the meeting the Resident
Doctors had with the Minister of Labour
and Productivity, Mr. Emeka Wogu; and
Chukwu.
A statement by the Head (Press/Public
Relations) in the labour ministry, Mr.
Samuel Olowookere, said that NARD had
agreed to consider the suspension of its
ongoing strike action.
He said, “The decision to consider the
suspension of the strike action by NARD
was reached after a meeting which
lasted for over 14 hours.
“In attendance at the meeting include
the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi
Chuckwu; Executive Chairman, National
Salaries Income and Wages Commission,
Chief Richard Ebule; and Permanent
Secretary in the Ministry of Health,
Ambassador Sani Bala.”
Meanwhile, the Provost, College of
Medicine, Idi-Araba, Prof Folasade
Ogunsola, has said that medical
students are affected negatively
whenever the resident octors embark
on a strike.
Ogunsola, who spoke during the KB
Klub’s annual philanthropic day in Lagos,
noted that crisis in the health sector
was not good for students in the
profession.
She explained that resident doctors
helped in training medical students,
adding that it was necessary for
government to curb strike actions in the
health sector.
She said, “Resident doctors’ strike will
have a negative impact on medical
students. It will affect the students’
training. This is because the resident
doctors are part of those who assist us
in training medical students from clinical
centres. They are actually doctors in
training for specialisation.”

Aiyegbeni on fire; Should Keshi call him to Super Eagles?
Yakubu Aiyegbeni netted the winner for
Guangzhou R&F in their 1-0 win over
Changchun Yatai the Chinese Super
League on Saturday.
The Nigerian latched onto a precise pass
from Brazilian teammate Rafael Coelho
to coolly lift the ball past the onrushing
Changchun Yatai goalkeeper Song
Zhenyu for the game’s only goal in the
56th minute.
The win recorded at the Yuexiushan
Stadium lifts Guangzhou R&F to fifth on
the CSL standings with 36 points from
27 matches.
Yakubu’s goal against Changchun Yatai
was his 13th in the league this season
and underlines his status as one of the
most feared marksmen in China’s top
flight.
The 30-year-old scored nine league
goals last season.
How to kill your child? By Dr. Biodun Ogungbo.
In the house
The two-year old girl did not know she
was going to die on the fateful day. She
thought mummy truly cared and would
do all to protect her from harm. But, on
this day, mummy had her head in the
clouds and her brain in the blender.
She had had a hard time, getting to the
market, and a most stressful time
shopping at the market. And you know
Nigerian markets. She was cooking a
lovely pepper soup meal for the family.
It was nice and hot and she had spent
all day cooking. So, with frayed nerves
and short tempers, she wondered why
the baby could not understand her
predicament and wait to be fed. How
can she be crying of hunger when mom
was doing her best with this lovely
soup?
Anyway, mummy will just pop into the
toilet for a second. She warned the
baby not to go near the pot. ‘Hot, hot,
hot’, she said to the hungry baby. Well,
to cut a long story short, the baby
decided to feed herself and grabbed the
pot off the cooker, upending the
contents on herself. I think the doctor
said it was 90 per cent burns. Or was it
95 per cent? It doesn’t matter, as the
job was effective. Sad that it took the
baby a whole day to die!
Children burning and injuring
themselves in the home is a tale you
hear every day. I am not even talking
about those who leave their children
with housemaids no older than the
child.
In the car
You should take your one and only child,
a beautiful baby boy, for a drive. Please,
take your husband along! He made the
baby and needs to participate in the
killing process. Let your husband drive,
as usual, since he owns the car and you
can sit beside him as the ‘Madam.’
Once in the car, please ensure you put
on your seat belts, after all, you do not
trust Nigerian drivers, especially the
‘dangerous, cold hearted, untutored taxi
drivers in Lagos.’
Once a taxi driver hits you in Nigeria,
they are either prostrating on the floor,
begging for forgiveness; or you see their
tail lights as they speed off in a ‘hit and
run style.’ If you can still see, that is.
Anyway, once you are safely ensconced
in the car, please leave your child in the
back, preferably unrestrained, or better,
allow him to stand between mom and
dad, so he can see the ‘Okada’ as it
drives recklessly towards your car. Or,
maybe, it is your husband who is driving
recklessly towards the ‘Keke Napep!’
Doesn’t matter really! The important
point is that someone should cause an
accident that allows your boy to become
a projectile through the windshield.
If the windshield is already cracked,
then it will be easier for your child to
land on the concrete asphalt. But if it is
a new car from Korea, then his severe
head injury might actually occur in the
car — for you to see.
What I hate is the Nollywood style tears
that usually follow this scenario. As if it
wasn’t the plan all along. The plan was
to kill your own child, through utter
stupidity, abject ignorance and fake
affluence.
The message
Yes, some things are accidental and
stuffs happen. But, sometimes,
carelessness and lack of thought leads to
the scenarios painted. I am sorry if it is
all too shocking for you and perhaps the
title is a bit melodramatic. But, these
things happen and keep happening in
our community.
There was a time I would try to stop
cars in which the baby or a young child
was unrestrained and vulnerable. But I
have since stopped after receiving
insults. One mother asked me, ‘Why is
it your business? Is it your child?’
That’s when it struck me that I may
have been messing up their plans.
Perhaps childcare and nursery school
fees had become a problem, a big drain
on the family’s finances and some
people had to be sacrificed (I use that
word advisedly!).
The police
Sometimes, I wonder what the job of
the Nigerian police really is. These are
obvious crimes being committed in
broad daylight and with the police as
witnesses.
Yet, they are oblivious to the plight of
the child — Nigeria’s future leaders.
They are busy hiding from Boko Haram
they have no idea what else is going on
around them!
So what can we do?
Please join me today to protest loud
and clear, such that even the deaf may
hear our voices.
Children must be restrained in cars. Car
seats must be imported or
manufactured to ensure safety for
children. Surely, they cannot be more
expensive that a trip to the casualty.
Older children must be trained to use
the seat belt. Remember, there is
nothing wrong in Madam sitting in the
back to carry the baby while wearing a
seat belt.
Finally, please beg our policemen and
women to do their sworn duty to
protect each member of the society,
especially the vulnerable.
I know it is hard being a parent and
accident occurs every day in the home.
However, we must be ever so careful
and do all we can to protect the
children. They come first, above all else.
I mean some women will give all they
have to be blessed with a child. Yet,
some who are blessed fail to do all they
can to protect their most important
asset.
This is the truth and yes, the truth
hurts.
20 killed in fresh B’Haram attack
At least 20 people were killed when
Islamist group Boko Haram attacked a
town in northeast Nigeria, triggering
clashes with troops stationed there, the
military said on Sunday.
Reuters reported that a spokesman for
Nigerian forces in northeastern Borno
State, which lies at the heart of a four-
year-old Islamist insurgency, said the
Islamists crept into the town of Damboa
in the early hours of Saturday.
They killed five worshippers at a
mosque as they said their morning
prayers, he said.
“While they were unleashing their
mayhem, troops … engaged the
terrorists, killing 15 in the process while
others fled,” the military spokesman,
Captain Aliyu Danja, said in a statement
obtained by Reuters.
The military often gives significantly
higher casualty figures for insurgents
than for its own men, and it is usually
not possible to verify them
independently.
Despite a concerted military offensive
meant to crush Boko Haram since May,
it remains the biggest security threat to
Africa’s top energy producer.
Its targets have traditionally been
security forces, Christians or Muslim
clerics who speak out against it, but its
fighters have increasingly turned their
sights on civilians in the past few
months – massacring hundreds in
roadside attacks or assaults on Western-
style schools they consider sacrilegious.
Nigerian fighter jets last week bombed
camps belonging to suspected Islamist
militants in northeast Nigeria in
response to a massacre of students at
an agricultural college that killed at least
41.
Aviation crisis: FG suspends Dana Air licence again …24 hours after grounding Associated airline
Three days after a tragic crash involving
an Associated Airlines plane killed 14
people in Lagos, the Federal
Government, through the Nigerian Civil
Aviation Authority on Sunday night,
announced the suspension of Dana Air’s
operations nationwide.
The decision to suspend Dana’s
operations came 24 hours after the
NCAA grounded the operations of
Associated Airlines, whose Embraer 120
plane crashed near a fuel depot two
minutes after takeoff at the Lagos
airport, leaving only six survivors.
The charter plane was conveying the
remains of a former Governor of Ondo
State, Dr. Olusegun Agagu, to Akure for
interment. It also had on board 20
people, including officials of the state
government, family members and
friends of Agagu.
Also, 24 hours after the Associated
Airlines crash, another major air disaster
was averted when a Kabo Airlines’
Boeing 747 plane carrying 512 pilgrims
had a near-crash at the Sokoto airport
with deflated tyres, damaging the
airport’s Instrument Landing System.
The Coordinating General Manager,
Corporate Communications, Aviation
Parastatals, Mr. Yakubu Dati, confirmed
to our correspondent on Sunday night
that the government had suspended the
operations of Dana Air nationwide.
Dati said the decision was to allow the
regulatory agency “conduct an
operational audit” on the carrier and its
planes.
The latest suspension of Dana’s
operations made it the third time the
NCAA would be grounding the carrier
over safety and other related issues.
On March 17, 2013, the government
suspended the operations of Dana in
order to “resolve certain safety issues,”
according to the NCAA.
Some days later, the government lifted
the suspension thus clearing the carrier
to resume operations.
The March 17 suspension came nearly
three months after the airline resumed
operations following a seven-month
suspension after its Boeing MD-83
crashed in Lagos, killing 163 people
The government had on June 5, 2012
revoked the operational licence of Dana,
two days after the crash in Iju-Ishaga,
Lagos.
The government had also at a time
directed Dana to pay compensations to
the families of all the victims of the June
3, 2012 crash or risk severe sanctions.
It is unclear whether the latest
suspension of the airline’s operation is
related to the issue of payment of
compensation or whether the NCAA is
having issues with it on the safety
condition of its planes.
The Associated Airlines’ crash in Lagos
and the Kabo Airlines’ averted crash in
Sokoto have combined to raise tension
in the sector as industry observers are
beginning to raise doubts about the
operational condition of planes flying in
the country.
The flying public is also worried that the
regulatory authority is not living up to
its task.
Meanwhile, the Accident Investigation
and Prevention Bureau has announced
the commencement of investigations
into the causes of the crash of an
Associated Airlines flight on Thursday,
and the near-crash of a Kabo Air plane
on Saturday.
A statement from the agency on Sunday
confirmed that the readout of the
recordings of the Associated Airlines’
flight recorders had started.
The statement signed by the
Commissioner, AIB, Capt. Muktar
Usman, said, “We have commenced
investigation into the crash of the
Embraer 120 ER aircraft marked 5N-BJY
belonging to Associated Aviation
Limited.
“Flight recorders of the ill-fated aircraft
have been recovered and will be
downloaded at the Bureau’s newly
installed flight laboratory at its Abuja
headquarters. The readout of the
recorders has commenced.”
The statement added that of the 20
passengers on board the aircraft, there
were only six survivors as of Saturday.
Associated Aviation Limited is a Nigerian
registered domestic airline, which
operates chartered and scheduled flights
in the country.
In a separate statement, the AIB also
said investigations had commenced into
the incident involving a Kabo Air B747
plane, which occurred in Sokoto on
Friday.
The aircraft, carrying Saudi Arabia-bound
pilgrims, was believed to have burst
tyres on landing.
“The AIB investigators have been
dispatched to conduct an investigation
into the circumstances surrounding the
incident to determine the probable
cause. The investigation is not to
apportion blame or liability, but to
prevent future re-currence of similar
incidents and improve air safety through
safety recommendations,” the
statement explained.
It added that the AIB was charged with
the responsibility of investigating aircraft
accidents and serious incidents within
the country, and where Nigeria’s
interest was represented.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of
Journalists has described as tragic and
unfortunate the crash of the Associated
Airlines’ plane.
The union, in a statement by its Vice-
President, B Zone, Mr. Dele Atunbi, in
Abuja, commiserated with the
government and the people of Ondo
State over the tragedy that claimed the
lives of four state functionaries.
Also, a cleric, Pastor Akeem Idoniboye,
has attributed the high casualty figure
recorded in the ill-fated plane crash in
Lagos to the failure of the National
Emergency Management Agency to
handle emergency situations.
Idoniboye, who spoke during a sermon
at the Glorious Destiny Christian Centre
on Sunday, noted that some of the
victims, who were already out of the
plane, were killed by the explosion after
the crash and before help could reach
them.
