Nigeria qualifies for Brazil 2014, beats Ethopia 2-0 in Calabar

The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Saturday qualified for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
The African champions defeated the Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia 2-0 at the U.J Esuene Stadium in Calabar.
Victor Moses and substitute Victor Obinna Nsofor were the heroes for Nigeria.
Moses converted a 20th minute penalty to put Super Eagles who had earlier defeated the Ethiopians 2-1 in Adiss Ababa ahead on 3-1 aggregate.
Nsofor, who plays for Lokomotiv Moscow in the Russian Premier League, stunned the East Africans when he fired home a superb free- kick in the 82nd minute to send the packed U.J Esuene Stadium into celebration.
Nigeria thus qualified for next year’s global soccer fiesta on 4-1 aggregate.

Anambra: INEC reschedules election in 65 polling units for Tomorrow

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rescheduled election in 65 polling units in Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area for Sunday.

Voting could not hold in the wards due to late arrival of materials and other logistics challenges.

Electoral Commissioner (REC) Prof Chukwuemeka Onukogu made the announcement in a statement issued in Awka on Saturday.

US names Boko Haram, Ansaru as International Terrorist Organisations

After years of diplomatic patchwork and foot-dragging, the United States, yesterday, formally declared war on Boko Haram, classifying the Nigerian-based Al Qaeda affiliate, a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). The declaration would make Washington mobilize resources and intelligence to combat the ninth deadliest terrorist group in the world.

A statement issued by the US State Department, yesterday, in Washington, said the US government was invoking Section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, as amended, and section 1(b) of Executive Order 13224 to designate Boko Haram and Ansaru as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs).

IYAYI'S Death: ASUU suspends NEC meeting indefinitely

LEADERS of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday, suspended indefinitely the union’s National Executive Council, NEC, meeting planned to hold in Kano over the tragic auto-crash that claimed the life of ASUU former President, Professor Festus Iyayi, on Tuesday morning.

Thousands of students who had kept vigil, waiting for the outcome of ASUU NEC meeting, therefore went home disappointed following the announcement of the suspension of the meeting.

National Conference: Anyaoku Calls For Decentralisation Of Powers

A former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Mr. Emeka Anyaoku, has faulted Nigeria’s current governance structure and called for the decentralisation of powers to the six federating units in Nigeria.

Mr Anyaoku told reporters at the 3rd Goddy Jidenma Biannual Lecture held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Lagos on Tuesday that the proposed National Dialogue would provide an opportunity to correct the faulty structure.

House of Reps probe NNPC’s alleged $6.8bn Oil fraud

THE House of Representatives, yesterday, started an all-inclusive investigation into alleged fraudulent activities of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, with Vitol and Transfigura Commodity Trading Firms.

This was sequel to a motion entitled Urgent Need to Investigate the Alleged Connivance of the Nigerian National Corporation, NNPC, with Swiss Oil Dealers to Rob Nigeria Billion of Dollars, moved by Abiodun Balogun (APC, Ogun State).

Eaglets get N2m each +national honours

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday announced a cash gift of N2m each for all the players of the nation’s Under-17 team, the Golden Eaglets, who won the 2013 FIFA Under-17 World Soccer Championship on Friday in Abu Dhabi, United Emirates.

The players, their handlers and key members of the Nigerian Supporters’ Club, according to the President, will also be honoured with national honours during the next award ceremony.

ASUU set to suspend strike this week


Indications have emerged that the Academic Staff Union of Universities may call off the over four-month-old strike on Thursday.

Barring a last-minute change, the National Executive Committee of ASUU will meet on Wednesday night to consider the position of the congresses of the over 50 public universities on the offer made by the Federal government to revamp the institutions.

NFF Toils with Brazil's World Cup, Plans to borrow N50m for Ethopia game

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will again have to borrow for next weekend’s 2014 World Cup playoff against Ethiopia, officials disclosed.

The NFF need at least 50 million Naira for a November 16 playoff for a place at next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

36 feared killed as Fulani herdsmen strike in Benue

No fewer than 36 persons were, yesterday, feared killed while seven villages were overrun by suspected Fulani herdsmen in an outbreak of fighting between the invaders and native farmers in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

The massacre came barely two days after some assailants struck at Ikpele and Okpopolo communities in the state, killing seven farmers and displacing over 6,000 inhabitants.
