A new article written by Charles Oputa.
Enjoy below...
Right about now, some of the
readers will question the sense in
capturing and casting this type of
crazy captions for my articles. I
only write for those who are
patient enough to understand the
creative beauty of my mind. I
write for those who have depth
enough to see beyond what they
see, those who have a discerning
mind.
However, if your curiosity has
gotten the better of you, then
read on.
I am about to take up a subject
no one really wants any part of,
but that's alright, this is where
our imagination runs apart. For a
brief second, imagine this: if your
life were to end today, what
would your obituary read? Come
on; don't get frightened, thinking
about your obituary will not kill
you. Nothing escapes the
Creator's cycle; not plants, not
animals, nor human beings. All
living things emerge, gather, spark
new life, fall apart and die.
The purpose of all of this is not to scare
you about death which is inevitable, but
to expose you to a new information or
rather, share a certain mindset with you
that may help you live with humility
and aliveness that only an acceptance of
death can release.
'My Obituary' is meant to prick your
mind to start being fully conscious of
the moments you are alive.
Every moment of our lives, we are
knowingly or unknowingly writing a line
for our obituary. Every action or
inaction provides memories of us to
those we eventually leave behind; they
are the memories that the people we
love and leave behind will want to
include in the telling of our life's story.
Within the first quarter of this year, I
lost a good friend and cousin, Mr.
Emeka Aseme to kidnappers; he was
butchered and killed in cold blood. My
whole village was not only scandalized
by the senseless killing but till today,
the 'Blue Lake City' of Oguta has lost
the shine it had as a city of bubbling
happy go lucky people.
Emeka was a good man who provided
employment for hundreds of Oguta
people, he was sociable, liked by all and
sundry (or so we thought). Even though
Oguta had a lot of industrious sons and
daughters, Emeka's legacies stand out.
He cared about his people, he gave a
helping hand, and he was sensitive to
people's conditions.
Now that he's no more, all we have to
say of him (his obituary) are his good
deeds, what he contributed to the
betterment of his fellow man, especially
his kinsmen.
What would yours read like, now that all
you know is 'Me, Myself & I'?
What legacy are you living today, is it
different from the one you will want to
leave behind?
Some people live as if they will be here
forever, not giving a hoot about what
happens to the next person. If it’s not
their immediate personal/family
gratification, it does not concern them.
Mind you, I'm not saying you should
not care about your welfare and that of
your family o (if you know the AreaFada
well you will know that my family
remains my ROCK).
However, I still make an ample
proportion of my time to fighting the
course of our youth and being the Voice
of the Voiceless. And this gives me joy
and fulfillment. For me, it is what keeps
blood flowing in my veins, puts the
sparkle in my eyes and springs in my
steps...despite the unfavourable state
of the terrain. Wetin man go do?
You are the author of your own
Obituary, so tell me. Are you writing a
history of misery, or a tale of tenacity?
Were you inclusive and supportive? Or
were you exclusively out for yourself
alone, you selfish bloke. Did you lift
others up, or did you allow them to
knock you down? Did you stay down
long enough to recover, or did you stay
down complaining and winning. What
will your Obituary say about the way
you treated people and how you made
them feel about themselves. Most
importantly what will your Obituary say
about how you treated yourself? What
will be said about your attitude, how
you handled yourself in crisis. Perhaps
now is the time to consider how you
are living and what you want to be said
about you when you are not. Your life
provides the content of your Obituary,
so my guy, check yourself and park well.
For me, I came, I saw, I did it my way,
had fun and boned everyone who
thought it wasn’t possible. That’s my
Obituary. I'm still here though, for the
longer haul!

TRAGIDY: HOW 8 MEN RAPED 18 YEAR OLD GIRL TO DEATH.
Police detectives in Obosi, Idemili Local
Government Area of Anambra State are
now battling to unravel the circumstances
in which Chekwube Mbaka, an 18-year-
old girl left her father’s house to buy
N100 garri to serve as dinner for her
family but never returned alive.
The victim was allegedly gang-raped by
eight coffin makers in an uncompleted
building at Odume-layout in Obosi,
Idemili North council area of Anambra
State.
Chekwube, whose family hails from Ogboji
community in Ezzagu, Ishielu council area
of Anambra State, met her untimely
death on the fateful day when she was on
her way back from where she had gone to
buy garri for the family.
Though policemen attached to Obosi
Police Division have already arrested two
of the suspects in their effort to untie the
knot surrounding the gruesome murder of
the girl, her family has remained in pains,
calling for justice.
Narrating how the incident happened,
father of the deceased, Mr. Mbaka told
Saturday Sun how he sent his daughter
out on the fateful day after he came back
home and discovered that the house was
empty and there was no food for the
entire family to eat.
He said: “When I came back that evening
from work, I noticed there was no food
for the family, I managed to bring out
N100 and gave to Chekwube to buy garri
for us to survive that night, I never knew
that evil was lurking around and that
enemies of God are also planning on how
to eliminate my daughter. She left
without any premonition of evil but when
we waited for her for too long, we
became apprehensive that she was
wasting time, initially, I was angry that
she had not returned but when it got out
of hand, I noticed all was not well with
Chekwube”
He further disclosed that before the
deceased left for the errand, her friend, a
20-year-old boy simply identified as Skido
(not real name) had visited the family and
volunteered to escort Chekwube. Since
they were best of friends and known to
the family of the deceased, they were
allowed to go but the boy ran home
weeping to report that over eight young
men accosted them on their way home
and forcefully took away Chekwube and
disappeared into thin air.
According to the family, when Skido
alerted them that their daughter was
forcefully dragged away by the coffin
makers to an unknown place, they
immediately raised the alarm and shortly
after that, they discovered the lifeless
body of Chekwube, naked in an
uncompleted building.
It was at that point that the family and
sympathizers noticed that the deceased
was gang-raped by the eight coffin
makers now at large and in the process of
preventing her from shouting to attract
passersby, they held her by the throat
leading to her death.
Her father further said: “We noticed
fingerprints on her throat, that may be
because they held her down to prevent
her from shouting to attract passersby
because the incident took place around
9pm, people were still passing. They
defiled my daughter and killed her in the
same place. We have alerted the police
but we can’t stop crying for Chekwube,
an intelligent and obedient girl who never
gave anybody headache not even in the
school nor at home”
When asked if he was suspecting
anybody, Mr. Mbaka said he is suspecting
the artisans living close to his house,
adding that they might have conspired
and masterminded the barbaric act,
following the alleged regular sexual
demands they had made to his daughter
in the past.
However, the case has been transferred
to the Divisional Crime Bureau, DCB of
Obosi Police Division where our reporter
gathered that Odume Obosi had recorded
four violent rape cases leading to death,
all within a space of three months.
Meanwhile, the Divisional Police Officer of
Obosi Division, CSP Dimale J.O confirmed
the incident and disclosed that two
persons including one of the coffin makers
had been arrested, adding that efforts
were being made to arrest the fleeing
seven coffin makers.

DELTA STATE TO START KIDNEY TRANSPLANT IN 2014.
DELTA State Governor, Dr.
Emmanuel Uduaghan, has said the state
University Teaching Hospital, Oghara, will
start kidney transplant by February 2014.
Speaking on a Radio/Television phone-in-
programme at the Delta Broadcasting
Service, Asaba, he said the state
government was presently benefiting from
its partnership with the University of Texas
Teaching Hospital, Dallas, with some of its
doctors and nurses undergoing training on
renal issues and treatment in Dallas.
"Hopefully by February, next year, the
Renal Unit of the State University Teaching
Hospital will start kidney transplant in
Oghara in conjunction with the Texas
University Teaching Hospital", he stated.
The governor said that there had been an
increased medical tourism to the state due
to the ultra-modern facilities at the State
University Teaching Hospital, Oghara.
Uduaghan noted that as a result of the
pressure on the hospital facilities and
personnel, additional 300 bed-facilities
would soon be added to the University
Teaching Hospital, stressing that this would
ease pressure on the hospital and reduce
the waiting time for beds, especially for
surgical cases.
According to him, various health
programme in the state, especially the
Free Maternal and Rural Health scheme
had benefited both Deltans and non-
Deltans alike, especially the needy in the
state, stating that "the programme is open
to Nigerians, irrespective of states and
tribes in the spirit of brotherliness and
peaceful co-existence.
"As a trained doctor, it will be harsh and
inhuman for me to turn back a pregnant
woman from the state free maternal
programme because she is a non-Deltan.
We are all Nigerians and we have to help
ourselves in areas of need".
Uduaghan explained that the state was
paying more attention to primary
healthcare to reduce pressure on the
secondary and tertiary healthcare levels.

I’m an object of anger, frustration —Atiku
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar
has lamented that his social media
engagement has, of late, been marred
by barrage of criticisms.
In a blog and Facebook post, he said he
had been made an object of vituperative
utterances; but added that the
criticisms were “understandable” due to
the “crushing weight of our challenges
as a country.”
Atiku argued that his social media
followers who are university students,
for instance, have a reason to direct
their anger and frustration at him
because it’s difficult for them to have a
subsisting hope in the Nigerian Project
after having been forced to sit at home
for months.
He said, “When you’re a university
student forced to sit at home for
months, due to no fault of yours, I
realise that it is difficult to understand
why you should have any hope in your
country. What you want to do is lash out
at a system that keeps conspiring to let
you down. That is understandable.
“Understandably, there are a lot of
complaining voices. And I’m speaking
from experience, as a former political
office holder now active on Facebook
and Twitter, and often the object of a
lot of anger and frustration.”
The former number two citizen who
enjoined his online followers never to
allow their “frustrations to blind” them,
explained that he had been working
round the clock with a view to
“generating and highlighting solutions to
the pressing problems” bedeviling the
nation.
He stated that an essay competition he
introduced, focusing on the solutions to
the challenges bedeviling the education
sector, in which the winner will be
awarded a scholarship; and his
“impressive ‘American University’
concept,” which he “transplanted” to
Nigeria, were some of his efforts aimed
at “creatively solving our problems.”
“Thus was the American University of
Nigeria born. Change is possible in
Nigeria. Ideas can survive and thrive
here. But we must start by paying
attention to them. Let us discuss them,
tweet them, Facebook them, blog
them,” Atiku enjoined.
However, Atiku’s sermons did not
placate the anger of many of his online
followers, as they further disagreed with
him on his discourse on national issues
and gave him more knocks.
Many of those who commented on his
Facebook page said they were at a loss
as to how Atiku, who served as Vice-
President for eight years, could turn
around and become a “saint overnight.”
They accused the Turaki Adamawa of
merely seeking public sympathy through
his social media engagement. “It’s only
in Nigeria that past political leaders turn
around and become saints overnight.
Sir, let me correct this impression of
yours: we know vividly that you are part
of our problem. What was your
antecedent while in power?”
Aderinboye George wrote.
Some of his followers also argued that
the American University of Nigeria,
which he was referring to as one of his
achievements, was not set up to benefit
the masses.
“Oga Atiku, how much is the tuition fee
of your university? You started that
school with around N900, 000 as tuition
fee! Only God knows how much it is
now. How have you helped us?” one
Akila Joshua asked.
Corroborating Joshua’s argument, one
Obafemi Adesina-Salami wrote, “Please
sir, how affordable is the American
University of Nigeria, which we heard
you built with the interest of Nigerian
parents at heart? Why should you leave
qualitative education in Nigeria for the
super rich?”
A particular Facebook friend, Michael
Amos, said, “Atiku, you are not better in
anyway; believe me, you are a notice
seeker. If Nigeria is as bad as you are
painting it, it means you contributed to
it. You were in an administration that
pioneered this democracy, which you
now criticise as being in a state of
collapse.
“By saying you understand our
complaints with the system, it shows
you did not lay a lasting foundation.
With regard to this obvious wrong
foundation, it is wrong to have you
blame the state of the nation on
anybody; unless you live in perpetual
irresponsibility.”
The Presidency has also reacted to
Atiku’s blog post, saying he was merely
“politicising” on the social media the
strike embarked upon by university
teachers.
Special Assistant to the President on
New Media, Reno Omokri, in a Twitter
post said, “Atiku sir, Please, understand
that governments face strikes all the
time. Under your tenure, even the
Nigeria Police went on strike. Let’s not
politicise this.”
National conference: We’re not afraid of Nigeria’s break-up – Northern elders • National Assembly backs Jonathan
The Northern Elders Forum has said the
North is not afraid of the break-up of
Nigeria if its citizens vote for it at the
end of any conference.
The spokesman for the forum, Prof.
Ango Abdullahi, said this in a telephone
interview with one of our
correspondents, in Abuja, on
Wednesday.
He was commenting on the national
dialogue advisory committee set up on
Tuesday by President Goodluck
Jonathan.
Abdullahi,who said he saw nothing
wrong with Nigerians sitting down to
discuss their problems, explained that
contrary to the views held in certain
quarters, northerners were not opposed
to any form of dialogue in whatever
form or shape.
He said, “There is no problem with
Nigerians sitting down to discuss their
problems whether in the form of
dialogue, whether in a form of
conference, whether in the form of a
meeting, even in the form of a
Sovereign National Conference.
His view on SNC is however not in
tandem with that of the foremost
Northern socio-cultural organisation, the
Arewa Consultative Forum, which on
Tuesday said it would not support any
form of dialogue termed sovereign.
However, Abdullahi, a former vice-
chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello
University, Zaria, said, “The SNC that
people are advocating; people are
saying that it is a way for Nigeria to
break up. This shouldn’t be a problem.
Even in Britain today, Scotland is still
agitating to opt out of the United
Kingdom; even the Northern Island
problem is still there.
“In Spain, there are separatist groups
agitating for independence. Even
recently, we had in the Soviet Union
and it has broken up into 11 different
countries.
“India was created in 1948, in one year
there was Pakistan, in another year
there was Bangladesh. So why shouldn’t
it happen in Nigeria if they (advocates of
SNC) believe this is the way to go?
“We don’t mind any conference no
matter the outcome. I don’t think it
should worry any Nigerian.”
The former VC said the earlier
Nigerians accepted that Nigeria’s ethnic
nationalities could never dissolve into
one, the better.
He stated that it was left for Nigerians
to make something good out of the
almagamation of Nigeria by Britain in
1914.
Abdullahi also noted that it was
probably out of the desire to make
something out of the situation that led
to the several conferences that had
been held since 1914.
He, however, expressed fears that the
current attempt by the Jonathan
administration to hold another
conference when the reports of
previous ones had not been
implemented was suspicious.
The NEF spokesman said the country
had held constitutional conferences in
1976, 1978, 1988, 1994/1995 and 2005.
He stated, “In each of these
conferences, there have been
voluminous reports on what is the
problem with Nigeria. It is not for lack
of information on the issues at stake.”
Abdullahi said that the country could
still gain from the reports of past
constitutional conferences.
He added, “When you look at it from
this point of view, those who believe
that Nigeria’s time is being wasted or
that these are diversionary tactics have
a point.
“Because this is what (President
Olusegun) Obasanjo tried to do when
he was looking for a third term and he
thought that he wouldn’t get it through
another means except through
constituting a constitutional
conference.”
National Assembly backs conference
The Chairman of the Senate Committee
on Information, Media and Public Affairs,
Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, in an SMS to
one of our correspondents in Abuja,
said, “The Senate supports the
President in his choice of the members
of the committee.”
The House of Representatives also
welcomed the committee and its
membership, saying that Nigerians were
entitled to freedom of expression.
However, it clarified that whenever a
constitutional matter cropped up in the
course of discussions at the conference,
it should be referred to the National
Assembly.
The Deputy Leader of the House, Mr.
Leo Ogor, who spoke to The PUNCH in
Abuja, explained that the National
Assembly remained the legally
constituted body to resolve any
constitutional issues in the country.
Ogor added, “We are the true
representatives of the people. That is
why constitutional matters must be left
to the National Assembly to handle.
“But, the constitution (1999) guarantees
freedom of expression and association.
On that score, the conference is a
welcome development; to give people
the opportunity to talk and share ideas.”
Project Nigeria, two other groups
kick
The Project Nigeria Conscientious
Group however questioned the
rationale behind the appointment of
Senator Femi Okurounmu as the
committee chairman.
As the group kicked, two others faulted
the composition of the committee,
saying it was not representative.
The PNCG, in its reaction on
Wednesday, said that appointing
Okurounmu as chairman of the
committee, might amount to an
embarrassment to Nwabueze.
The Secretary-General of the group, Mr.
Wale Okunniyi, told one of our
correspondents on the telephone that
if the Federal Government had
consulted well, Nwabueze ought to been
made the head of the committee.
Okunniyi said, “If they had consulted,
Prof. Nwabueze should be the chair of
the committee. If he has to play a role
in the committee, he has to be the
chair.
“Though Okurounmu is emminently
qualified and he is our own, he
understands the issues. However when
both Okurounmu and Nwabueze are
under the same roof to discuss the issue
of national question, you know what is
right.
“So if that is not intended to embarrass
Nwabueze, then you know what is right
and what is right in this case is that
Nwabueze should preside over the
discussion.”
He said despite the development,
Nwabueze, would not reject the
appointment as a member of the
committee.
He added that the Senior Advocate of
Nigeria , who is still abroad, might not
return to the country until after the
swearing-in of the members of the
committee.
“Prof. Nwabueze is scheduled to
return to the country on the 11 but the
swearing-in is to take place on the 7,”
Okunniyi added.
He stated that the PNCG which is led
by Nwabueze had done “the most
profound research” on the national
conference, adding that it already had
five models of how it could be
conducted.
Okunniyi added, “Project Nigeria
Conscientious Group is the body that
has done the most profound research
on the national question in the last two
years. The group has come up with five
models with which you can conduct a
national conference within the ambit of
the existing law. We don’t intend to
rock the boat. We are not quarelling
with Okurounmu, he is our own, he
understands the issue; he is qualified
but when you put both of them in one
room, Nwabueze must take precedence.
“In the actual conference, he should
chair it because he understands the
issues better. If it must hold,
Nwabueze is the most authoritative
person that can chair it.
“This is good because we have to do
damage control. If they had consulted
us, we would have told them what to
do. We want this thing to succeed and
we are going to make sacrifice for it to
succeed. We are not going to criticise
them too much; we are going to
encourage them.
A member of the committee, Col. Tony
Nyiam (retd), however, said they would
take the assignment with the highest
sense of responsibility.
“This is not the time to talk. It is the
time to work. We know that we have a
very important responsibility before us.
We pray that Nigerians will judge us
based on our work,” he said.
Nyiam, who was part of an attempt to
overthrow Gen. Ibrahim Babangida’s
regime, added that he was glad to be a
part of those planning the national
dialogue under a civilian government.
He said there was the need for
Nigerians to determine how they want
to co-exist and to encourage the
country’s diversity and promote its
unity.
The Director, CCM of the University of
Jos, Prof. Audu Gambo, and the
Executive Director, Christian Foundation
for Social Justice and Equity, Mr. Joseph
Sangosanya, both faulted the
composition of the advisory committee.
Gambo and Sangosanya, in separate
interviews with one of our
correspondents on Wednesday, said
though the idea of a national dialogue
was a welcome development, it should
be done in such a manner as not to
raise any suspicion about the intention
of government.

BREAKING News*********** Nollywood Star, Shot Dead In Benin.
Nollywood star, Flavian Okojie, has been
shot dead in Benin, the Edo State capital.
Okojie, who just got married to NTA
presenter Omo-kivie Adeola three weeks
ago. His widow in her distress posted a
facebook update indicating her despair.
"My husband, my rhythm of my heart has
been taken away me forever. how will i
start..".
MEN'S HEALTH: TIPS TO HEALTHY SPERM.
The sperm is the male reproductive cell,
manufactured within the male testes that
contain the highly specific paternal genetic
information to be contributed through the
process of fertilisation to the female egg
cells.
It is vital for a man's sperm to be in good
shape if pregnancy is desired.
Fertile, healthy sperm are defined not just
by the number of sperm (count) but also
by sperm concentration by the way they
move (motility) and by healthy morphology
(their shape and size).
Sperm motility is determined by the
percentage of sperm that are moving and
their capacity to "swim." Healthy sperm
motility allows sperm to sustain vitality
and propel themselves through the uterus,
right up to the fallopian tube and
ultimately penetrate the surface of the
ovum and fertilise the egg.
The production of sperm is continuous and
requires approximately 100 days to
develop (74 days to form and20-30 to
mature). It is most efficient at 32-34°
Celsius. So, exposure to excessive heat or
prolonged fever can adversely affect sperm
count, motility and morphology.
Factors that can affect the sperm
*High temperature
*Stress
*Very tight underwear and trousers
*Alcohol and smoking
*Drugs: marijuana , cocaine
*Toxins
*Heavy metals and pollutants
*Radiation
*Infections: Sexually transmitted infection,
testicular mumps
*Use of hand-free devices thereby carrying
cell phones in pockets or close to the
scrotal region
*Placing of laptops on the thighs
*Others: sitting for too long with legs
crossed, cycling long distance
Infertility is the inability to conceive
despite regular, unprotected sexual
intercourse for one year or longer.
Male infertility, which accounts for 20-30
per cent of infertility cases, is due to low
sperm production, misshapen or immobile
sperm or blockages that prevent the
delivery of sperm; erectile dysfunction or
impotence, genetic factors, illnesses,
injuries, chronic health problems and
lifestyle.
Not being able to conceive a child can be
stressful and frustrating. A lot of causes of
infertility are due to toxins in the body
that have been accumulated over a long
period of time. Some undigested food
products can remain in the intestine for up
to 200 hours instead of the normal 18
hours and produce toxins that are stored in
the body for months or years.
Toxins can also be accumulated from the
environment.
Over time, the toxins accumulate in major
organs and tissues and begin to have
negative effects. By the time a man
reaches age 55, he begins to experience
the andropause - an ageing phenomenon
in males which is similar to the menopause
in women and characterised by a decline in
the level of testosterone (the male
hormone).
This, in turn, can lead to mood swings,
depression, fatigue, erectile dysfunction,
hot flushes, and urinary problem. If these
toxins are not eliminated or neutralised,
they may lead to autointoxification (self-
produced toxins) and organ damage.
All these symptoms can be reduced by
going through a general detoxification
treatment and body cleansing. The Modern
Mayr Medicine is about the link between
digestion, intestinal health and overall
health.
According to the founder of the Mayr
Diagnostic Method and Mayr Therapy, Dr.
Franz Xavier Mayr, "The intestines are to
man what the roots are to the plant. Only
when the roots are kept in an optimal
condition of nourishment and cleanliness
can the plant (man) itself thrive and
remain healthy"
At Martlife Detox Clinic in Lagos - the first
Modern Mayr Medicine Clinic in Africa -
detoxification is the core element of all
treatment programmes. We offer a variety
of medical therapies that will improve
sperm fertility potentials, such as:
*Electrolysis foot bath - for the removal of
toxins and heavy metals from the liver,
gallbladder, kidney and blood
*Hydrotherapy - for removal of toxins via
the skin
*Hypoxicator - removes damaged
mitochondria and replaces it with healthy
ones. The mitochondria is the power
house of every cell
*Lymphatic massages - to improve
lymphatic drainage
*Colon irrigation
*Sea oxygen
*Body massages - helps increase blood
supply to the organs
*Orthomolecular supplements - which
would increase sperm motility, count and
morphology
In conclusion, it is possible to improve
sperm health in as little as three months, if
one is keen. All it takes is to focus on
avoiding obstacles - whether it be smoking,
drinking too much, avoiding the junk in
your diet and eating the right foods.
Cleaning up the body by way of
detoxification is paramount.
The supplements will certainly assist; but
get the groundwork done first. If
successful, one will have a blissfully happy
(and hopefully pregnant!) lady and the joys
of fatherhood to look cherish for a long
time to come.

It is also to advise the government on
a time frame for the national dialogue/
conference; its legal framework, legal
procedures and options for integrating
decisions and outcomes of the national
conference into the constitution; and
advise the government on any other
matters that may be related or
incidental to the conference.
Jonathan had in his Independence Day
broadcast on Tuesday, said he decided
to set up the advisory committee to
establish the modalities for the national
dialogue or conference.
“I expect the report to be ready in one
month, following which the nation will
be briefed on the nomenclature,
structure and modalities of the
dialogue/ conference,” he had added.
The announcement was well received by
the pan-northern socio-cultural
organisation , the Arewa Consultative
Forum, the Afenifere, Ohanaeze
Ndigbo, the Ijaw National Congress and
the two Peoples Democratic Party
factions.
Although the Afenifere, Ohanaeze
Ndigbo, the INC and the PDP factions in
their separate reactions did not give
conditions for supporting dialogue, the
ACF did.
The ACF advised against the dialogue
taking the form of a Sovereign National
Conference.
The ACF National Publicity Secretary,
Mr. Anthony Sani, told one of our
correspondents in Kaduna, that an SNC
would amount to a vote of no
confidence in the nation’s democracy
and its institutions.
He added that the forum had nothing
much to say at “this formative stage of
the committee until when the name,
content, shape and scope of the
dialogue are made public.”
Sani said, “When I am asked to react to
Mr President’s decision to set up a
committee on how to organise a
national dialogue as to the appropriate
name, scope, content and direction, I
begin to wonder what to say.
“You would note that ACF has made it
clear that it is not opposed to a national
dialogue so long as the aim is to
strengthen the unity and diversity of
this country, since the concept of
nationhood presupposes that the people
can come together and unleash their
synergy by living up to collective
challenges for public good, provided such
a dialogue is not in the form of SNC
that amounts to a vote of no confidence
in our democracy and its institutions,
which no group has the right to do.”
Both Afenifere and Ohanaeze Ndigbo
said they were ready to make
submissions to the committee once
invited.
Afenifere advised that the proposed
national dialogue should focus on true
federalism so that the issue of
allocation of the country’s resources
could be well tackled.
Its Secretary, Chief Seinde Arogbofa, in
an interview with one of our
correspondents, said, “We don’t have
to pre-empt the terms of reference of
the committee. We must appreciate the
head of state for allowing Nigerians to
talk about our problems.
“We should be talking about issues of
security, youth unemployment and the
right structure. We believe that with a
true federal system, all other things will
automatically fall into place. The issue of
resources will be taken care of if we
have the right federal structure.”
The Secretary General of Ohanaeze
Ndigbo, Dr. Joe Nwaorgu, told one of
our correspondents that “all peace-
loving Nigerians must commend”
Jonathan for the initiative.
He said, “He has pulled Nigeria back
from the brink. Jonathan has saved
Nigeria by choosing a forum for talking
rather than shooting. It is a welcome
deviation from the past when former
Presidents were foot-dragging on the
issue.
“Let us restart our association
envisaged in the 1914 amalgamation
statement. Let us kick- start the system
so that all Nigerians can very truthfully
say they are Nigerians.”
The Ohanaeze secretary general said
the national conference would “ bring
an end to the abracadabra in the
country since 1966,” since it would give
the people the opportunity to “discuss
and say how we are to relate with one
another.”
Also, the INC advised that the national
conference should be used as an
opportunity to discuss all the problems
affecting the unity of the country.
The spokesman for the congress, Mr.
Victor Borubo, said there should be no
limitations to what should be discussed
when the national dialogue eventually
holds.
He said that resource control,
devolution of power, structure of the
country and issues on the Exclusive and
Residual lists should be among the
things that should be discussed at the
conference.
Borubo added, “There should be no
limitation to what should be discussed at
the conference as we expect those to
represent Nigerians to discuss
devolution of power, structure of the
country, resource control and issues on
the exclusive and residual list.
The NLC, through its Secretary-
General, Mr. Chris Uyot, said, “We
applaud the President for seeing the
need for a conference because we
believe in participatory and inclusive
government.
“Any form of dialogue or discussion
points to a positive and an inclusive
government and we support it. We
think it is a good idea which should be
encouraged.”
Also, the Bamanga Tukur-led PDP said
the President had through the decision
demonstrated that he derived his
mandate from Nigerians.
It hailed the President for anchoring
the theme of the independence day
broadcast on the road map to a secure
future for the nation, which it said was
not only unique but an eloquent
expression of his determination to
bequeath a transformed Nigeria.
The party, in a statement by its
National Publicity Secretary , Chief Olisa
Metuh, said by taking a definite stand
on national dialogue and setting up a
committee led by Sen. Femi Okurounmu
to fashion out the structure and
modalities for the conference, the
President has shown he is a listening
leader.
The statement reads in part, “Nigerians
listened to their President as he humbly
relegated accomplishments and beating
of the chest. We saw the President
assuming the place of an ordinary
Nigerian, in his pains, fears and
uncertainty about the future. This is
very commendable.
“We are pleased that the President
listens and leaves Nigerians in no doubt
that their opinions matter.
Also, the New PDP led by Alhaji
Abubakar Baraje, said there should no-
go areas in the work of the committee.
Its National Publicity Secretary, Chief
Chukwuemeka Eze, in an email to one
of our correspondents, said, “We see
the clamour for a national dialogue as
timely and appropriate as there is an
urgent need for Nigerians to come
together and discuss matters affecting
them as well as the way forward.
“We, therefore, welcome Mr.
President’s announcement in his
Independence Day broadcast about the
establishment of a committee to advise
him on the modalities for the holding of
the conference,” the New PDP said.

STRIKE COMPETITION BONANCA!!!
STRIKE BONAZA: The National Association
of Resident Doctors, today commenced an
indefinite
strike across Nigeria.
The President of the association, Jubril
Abdullahi, said his members were forced to
take the decision as a result of the federal
government’s refusal to meet their
demands.
The medical group had two weeks ago
issued a two weeks ultimatum and
threatened to embark on the indefinite
industrial action should the Federal
Government fail to pay the accumulated
salaries of its members within two weeks.
The doctors also complained of the refusal
of the government to implement an
agreement with the union on the
Integrated Payroll Payment System, IPPS.
Some teaching hospitals such as the Lagos
University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi-
Araba, owes its resident doctors more than
four months salaries. The LUTH chapter of
the group had only suspended an industrial
action about two weeks ago.
With this, the education and health sector
which are critical sectors of the nation's
economy have been brought to stand-still.
Currently, ASUU and SSANU are on an
indefinite total strike. Also the NUT is
planning to commence a solidarity strike.
Moreover, ASUP has announced that the
union will commence a total indefinite
strike nationwide on Friday October 4th
2013.
Who is to blame?
Owerri prison: Female inmates undergo pregnancy test over sex scandal.
Sequel to the report of alleged sexual
abuse of female inmates by prisons
officials at the Owerri Prison, female
inmates have been taken to the Federal
Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, for
compulsory pregnancy test.
The female convicts and those on awaiting
trial, it was gathered, were being taken to
the hospital on the directive of the
Comptroller General of Prisons, Zakari
Ibrahim, who sent a delegation to Owerri
prisons, to ascertain the veracity of the
alleged sexual misconduct between prison
officials and the inmates.
According to an impeccable source, who
pleaded anonymity, the parents of a
particular inmate, who came to visit their
convicted child were shocked to see her
in advanced stage of pregnancy.
The source disclosed: “When the girl was
brought to the prison, no one noticed that
she was pregnant until a few months
later. When her parents came to visit her,
they were shocked to find out that she
was pregnant. I think that is why the
management is conducting the pregnancy
test.”
When contacted, the state Prison
Controller, Reverend Cannon Isaiah
Amaliri, could not confirm or deny the
report.
Nobody at the Federal Medical Centre
agreed to speak on the matter.
Meanwhile, a source that pleaded
anonymity, confirmed that prison
authorities had used the FMC, Owerri in
the past for pregnancy tests.

Nigeria: The journey so far..
Exactly 53 years today, Nigeria gained
independence from Britain and thereby
ending 46 years of colonial rule. Nigeria
was born on January 1, 1914, following
the amalgamation of the then Southern
and Northern Protectorates by Lord
Fredrick Lugard.
The country owes its independence to
the struggles of nationalists like Dr.
Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo,
Alhaji Ahmadu Bello and others, who
were in the forefront of the clamour for
the involvement of Nigerians in the affairs
of their country. Several conferences
were held.
The late Chief Anthony Enahoro moved
the motion for Nigerian’s independence
on the floor of the House of
Representatives. Though he had proposed
independence for Nigeria in 1959, the
Northern members of the House were
opposed to the motion on the grounds
that the North was not ready. The clause,
stipulating a date for independence was
later substituted with another clause: “As
soon as possible.”
Eventually, the country gained
independence from colonial rule on
October 1, 1960 after about 15 years of
agitation for self-rule.
Nigeria started off as a federation with
three regions: East, West and North, as
the federating units and a parliamentary
system of government. Today, it is a
presidential democracy with 36 states
structure.
Blessed with an abundant human and
material resources, Nigeria showed so
much promise at independence. It was
taken for granted that within a few years,
the country would become one of the
leading countries of the world, politically
and economically. But that is one hope
that had seemingly been dashed. The
country never truly took off before crisis
started dogging its path soon after
independence. And since independence,
it has been a very bumpy ride.
Analysts say this is because successive
administrations have failed to harness the
resources for the benefits of the people.
Indeed, the country is bugged by
corrosive corruption, especially in public
service, while elections, most of the
times, have been massively rigged by
political groups, to the chagrin of their
opponents and the populace. Besides the
absence of strong institutions,
infrastructure in the country are in
comatose.
Frustrated by many failings of the nation,
not a few have described Nigeria as a
“giant with feet of clay” and other
pejorative terms.
Major events that defined Nigeria’s
politics
On January 15, 1966, the country
experienced its first military putsch. In
that coup, plotted by five majors of the
Nigerian Army, led by Major Chukwuma
Kaduna Nzegwu, leading lights of the First
Republics were killed. With the murder of
Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa, the mantle
fell on the Senate President, Chief Nwafor
Orizu, who called on the head of the
army, Major General Johnson T. U. Aguiyi-
Ironsi, to take over government. That
was the beginning of the incursion of the
military into the politics of the country.
On assumption of office, Ironsi introduced
a unitary system of government. Before
he could settle down to real business of
governance, he was killed and his
government overthrown by a group of
military officers from the North.
Aguiyi-Ironsi was abducted in Ibadan,
during a visit to the capital of then
Western Region on July 26, 1966. The
coup was carried out in retaliation to the
January upheaval in the military.
One of the charges against Aguiyi-Ironsi
was the unification decree of 1966.
Ironically, every military administration
after him operated a unitary system of
government.
The plan of those behind the second coup
was a break-up of the country. However,
they were dissuaded from the idea. After
about 72 hours, in which the country
floundered without a leader, the coupists
named General Yakubu Gowon as Head of
State. The then governor of Eastern
Region, Col Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-
Ojukwu kicked against Gowon’s
emergence.
The Aburi meeting, civil war and
successive military regimes
Ojukwu had refused to accept the
leadership of Gowon, as according to him,
he was not the most senior military
officer at that material time. In the days
after the coup, tension mounted. The
military, as a way of resolving the debacle,
went to Aburi, Ghana, for a retreat. At
the end of the retreat, they came up with
the famous Aburi Accord.
Unfortunately, the accord meant to arrest
the drift in the country failed, as the
proponents could not implement it. The
result was a 30-month bitter civil war.
The Eastern Region, led by Ojukwu,
frustrated by the events in the country,
in the wake of the counter-coup,
especially the unrestrained massacre of
Igbo in the northern part of the country,
had declared itself a sovereign state of
Biafra. At the end of the war, which
lasted from 1967 to 1970, the Biafran had
lost more than one million Igbo.
Other military regimes held sway in the
country, as Gowon was toppled, for the
government of Murtala Muhammed.
Murtala was killed in a failed coup led by
Col Buka Suka Dimka and his second-in-
command, Olusegun Obasanjo took over.
The military ruled the country until
October 1, 1979 when General Obasanjo
handed over to Alhaji Shehu Shagari,
signalling the birth of the Second
Republic. That republic was short-lived, as
on December 31, 1983, the Army struck
again, sacking the civilian administration
of Shagari.
General Muhammadu Buhari emerged the
Head of State and that signalled the
commencement of another 20 years of
the military interregnum in politics of the
nation. Barely one and half years in the
saddle, Buhari was overthrown by General
Ibrahim Babangida, who made futile
attempts to return the country to civil
rule. The military government conducted
the June 12, 1993 presidential poll
intended to cap the elections for the
commencement of the Third Republic.
However, on June 26, 1993, the
government annulled the presidential
election. Expectedly, that gave rise to
rash of reactions.
In the heat of the chaos caused by the
annulment, Babangida hurriedly “stepped
aside” on August 26,1993. He handed
over to an Interim National Government
(ING) led by Chief Ernest Shonekan,
which was sacked by General Sani Abacha,
less than three months later. With that,
the Third Republic ended in stillbirth.
Nigeria was to witness a long drawn
battle, with the winner of the election,
the late Chief MKO Abiola and members
of the pro-democracy groups pressing for
the revalidation of June 12, 1993
election. Abiola declared himself
president and was arrested and detained.
The Abacha junta launched a vicious war
against the pro democracy groups, led by
National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).
It was one of the darkest moments in the
life of the country. However, when
Abacha was preparing to transmute to a
civilian president, he died on June 7,
1998, in the confines of Aso Rock
Presidential Villa. Barely a month after,
Abiola too died. The death of both men
drew the curtain on the agitation for the
revalidation of the June 12, 1993
presidential election.
Return of democracy
On May 29, 1999, the Fourth Republic
took off with General Abdulsalami
Abubakar, who succeeded Abacha,
handing over power to a democratically
elected President, Chief Olusegun
Obasanjo. Having spent eight years in
office, Obasanjo planned a third term in
office, when his deputy for eight years,
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, wanted to succeed
him.
Pathetically too, one time Nigeria Head of
State, General Muhammadu Buhari has
tried in vain to stage a comeback.
Interestingly too, up till now, Buhari is still
smarting up to rule the country again!
At the twilight of his eight-year
administration, Obasanjo sought to
extend his rule through a tenure
elongation bill that was part of
constitution amendment sent to the
National Assembly. There was public
outcry against the elongation bill,
popularly called Third Term Bill.
Apparently in response to opposition to
the move by the executive to extend the
tenure of office from two to three, the
Senate declined to approve the bill.
In 2009, the country was thrown into a
constitutional crisis, following the
prolonged absence of late President Musa
Yar’Adua from the country. Yar’Adua, who
succeeded Obasanjo, had gone to Saudi
Arabia for medical treatment without
handing over to his deputy, Dr. Goodluck
Jonathan, as provided for in the
constitution. To avert a constitutional
crisis, the National Assembly invented the
“doctrine of necessity” and empowered
Jonathan to assume the presidency in
acting capacity. Jonathan later contested
and won the 2007 general election on the
platform of the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP).
Former Senate President, Senator Ameh
Ebute, took a critical look at the
leadership crisis in the country and
blamed the incessant military
interregnum for its instability. He stated:
“If not for the coup, Nigeria would have
matured politically, like the advanced
democracies of the world.”
Endless agitation for Sovereign
National Conference
Pundits have always believed that a
conference of sorts, where Nigerians
would discuss frankly about the nation, is
the only panacea to the many problems
of the country. While the civil society
group clamour for a Sovereign National
Conference (SNC), other critical
stakeholders believe that while there is
need for Nigerians to talk, it must not be
tagged a SNC.
Former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme
says: “I don’t believe in Sovereign
National Conference, but we need to
come together and discuss the problems
facing this great country, the solution and
the way of living together in peace
without these destructions.”
For Prof. Ben Nwabueze, “unless and until
the over 300 ethnic nationalities in
Nigeria come together in a national
conference to discuss the way forward,
peace and security may continue to elude
the country.”

Snake with foot found in China
A snake with a single clawed foot has
been discovered in China, according to
reports.
Dean Qiongxiu, 66, said she discovered
the reptile clinging to the wall of her
bedroom with its talons in the middle of
the night.
"I woke up and heard a strange scratching
sound. I turned on the light and saw this
monster working its way along the wall
using his claw," said Mrs Duan of Suining,
southwest China.
Mrs Duan said she was so scared she
grabbed a shoe and beat the snake to
death before preserving its body in a
bottle of alcohol.
The snake – 16 inches long and the
thickness of a little finger – is now being
studied at the Life Sciences Department
at China's West Normal University in
Nanchang.
Snake expert Long Shuai said: "It is truly
shocking but we won't know the cause
until we've conducted an autopsy."
A more common mutation among snakes
is the growth of a second head, which
occurs in a similar way to the formation of
Siamese twins in humans.
Such animals are often caught and
preserved as lucky tokens but have very
little chance of surviving in the wild
anyway, especially as the heads have a
tendency to attack each other.
I didn’t sign agreement not to run in 2015 – Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan has said
that he did not sign an agreement with
any group or persons not to contest the
2015 Presidential election for a second
term in office. Also, he has described as
unfair, the continuous strike by the
Academic Staff Union of Universities
(ASUU), despite efforts by his
government to address the infrastructural
decay in institutions of higher learning.
The President also disclosed that he met
with service chiefs yesterday with an
order to end the embarrassing attacks by
Boko Haram, adding that the state of
emergency declared had been successful
but the insurgents now look for soft spots
like schools to frustrate and embarrass
government.
Jonathan, during a Presidential media chat
anchored by Senami Ohiemohia of AIT,
with Shehu Dauda of Capital Post, Nosa
Igiebor of Tell Magazine, Gloria Ume-
Ezeoke of Channels Television and Shola
Oshunkeye of The Sun Newspapers,
challenged those who insist that he
signed such agreement to publish it for
Nigerians to see.
He said that his remarks at an interaction
in Addis Ababa with some Nigerians that,
if the seven-year single tenure passed, he
would not run, were misconstrued.
“I didn’t sign any agreement not to
contest. If I did, they would have shown
you. What I said was, if Nigeria accepts
the single tenure agreement, I will not
run because it will be assumed I’m
greedy, that having served four years as a
president and two years completion of
Yar’Adua’s term following his demise,
adding additional seven years will amount
to 12 years on the seat.”
President Jonathan insisted that the time
was not right for him to declare his
intentions on whether or not to contest
the 2015 election, saying doing so will be
against the Electoral Act and a criminal
offence.
He said: “It is even against the Electoral
Law for me to declare that I would
contest when the electoral body has not
blown the whistle,” adding however that
his silence should not be a stumbling
block to other people interested in
contesting because they must prepare to
convince Nigerians that they are the
better alternatives.
On the allegations that his aides were
already erecting billboards announcing his
intention, President Jonathan expressed
surprise at the development and said it
would be investigated and corrected since
he had ordered after the 2011 elections
that all billboards bearing his campaign
should be pulled down.
On ASUU’s strike, Jonathan said the
union’s continuous demand for earned
allowance was not part of the Federal
Government’s responsibility as they are
supposed to be paid from internally
generated revenue, adding that touting
infrastructural decay despite efforts
meant to address it was unfair. He
appealed to the lecturers to return to
class.
He said the government had fulfilled the
major part of the 2009 agreements and
that the others would be fulfilled as time
goes on.
President Jonathan said he personally
ordered the inventory of all the
universities in the country with the aim of
exposing the problem and gradually
addressing them.
“That is why we released N100 billion to
uplift the infrastructures of the
universities across the country. We
cannot solve all the problems overnight.”
Presidential Jonathan expressed surprise
that in spite of his goodwill to the
universities, ASUU had decided to remain
adamant, hinting that it was high time
labour laws were looked into to check
some of the excesses of striking workers.
He said: “ASUU strike is very unfortunate.
Throughout this period, government
decided to take inventory in schools. Our
technical team set up, visited all the
schools and presented video and pictures
to the Federal Executive Council and I
directed the Vice President to ensure that
the same report was presented to the
National Economic Council meeting, which
has governors as members.
“After seeing those documentations, we
said this must change. For us to take that
inventory, it means we are committed to
improve the university infrastructure. So,
for ASUU to go on strike on this, is unfair.
They didn’t prompt us to take this
inventory, we did it voluntarily.
“No government wants to expose itself,
so, for me to do this it shows we are
committed. I didn’t expect the strike to
last this long, that it has lasted this long is
unfortunate.”
On the immediate steps to end the
strike, President Jonathan said: “I call on
ASUU, for the sake of our children, to
return to class. Their earned allowances is
supposed to be paid from internally
generated revenue. We are only assisting
them, it is not mandatory.
“Even if we have all the money in the
world, we can’t solve all the problems
now and we have released N100 billion
outside the line budget, they should
return to class.”
The President described the seat of
power as hot because “whatever happens
in the country, people look up to the
President to solve it,” adding that despite
the numerous challenges, Nigeria was
better off under his administration.
He listed the establishment of more
federal universities, stemming corruption
in the agriculture and petroleum sectors
as well as the successful sale of power
generating and distribution companies to
the private sector as part of his
achievements, saying the results would
soon be felt.
President Jonathan denied that the
Nigerian economy was bankrupt,
describing those behind such assertions as
unpatriotic.
Again, Boko Haram massacre 40 students in Yobe
It was a bloody Sunday in Gujba, a sleepy
town in Yobe State, when gunmen
suspected to be Boko Haram Islamists
stormed the state’s College of Agriculture
and killed more than 40 students, some
of them in their sleep. The insurgents
were said to have launched the
coordinated attacks in the early hours of
yesterday. The attack was coming as four
travellers were slaughtered in renewed
attacks on motorists near Benisheik town
in neighbouring Borno State.
Giving an account of the killings, a
student who does want to be mentioned
said: “The attackers had sneaked into the
male hostel around 1am when the
students were fast asleep, set the
hostels, administrative block and some of
the classrooms ablaze before opening fire
on students who attempted to flee the
scene.”
A statement signed by Abdullahi Bego,
Special Adviser on Press Affairs and
Information to Yobe State Governor
Ibrahim Gaidam, confirmed that 40
students were killed in the massacre at
dawn. “Forty students were killed by
criminals and terrorists while four others
were injured during the attack,” the
media aide said in the statement.
He said that the Governor had visited the
injured persons on admission at the Sani
Abacha Specialist Hospital, Damaturu
even as he (Shema) described the attack
as “devastating, heinous and barbaric.”
According to Bego, the governor also
pledged that government would foot the
medical bills of the victims while
commiserating with the families of the
deceased, and those injured in the attack.
“Governor Gaidam is calling on the
military and other law enforcement
operatives in the state to intensify
surveillance and patrols, to deal more
effectively with the prevailing security
challenges. Although, there is increase in
troop movement and deployment of
more military hardware in the North-East,
people are yet to see the kind of action
that will effectively nip criminal and
terrorist activities in the bud, the
governor said in the statement.
Recall that yesterday’s attack came barely
two months after a similar attack on a
secondary school at Mamudo in which 42
students were reportedly killed. Gunmen
had set ablaze the students hostels at the
Government Secondary School on July 6,
killing 42 students and a teacher. The
development prompted the state
government to shut down public schools
in the state for two months in order to
enable it construct perimeter fences
around them.
In Borno, the insurgents returned to
Benisheik last Saturday, where four
passengers, including a woman travelling
in a Volkswagen Golf car were attacked.
The incident occurred at Malumti, a
village near Benisheik where the militants
had killed about 140 people mostly
travellers, two weeks ago.
Sources said the Islamists dared the
military men on patrol as they waylaid the
Golf car. “They killed the driver and three
men but spared the woman. The car and
its passengers were coming from
Damaturu,” a resident claimed. The
insurgents however, set ablaze the car.
As if that was not enough, the attackers
reportedly returned on Sunday morning,
hijacked a truck conveying food items
from Maiduguri, evacuated the items,
loaded them into a waiting vehicle and
burnt the vehicle after allowing the driver
to flee.
“Many vehicles trying to use the road
today, (Sunday) on their way to Yobe,
Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa and Jos were
stopped in the morning. Many of them
had to return to Maiduguri with their
passengers,” Saleh Ali, a trader told Daily
Sun .
Reacting to the incidents yesterday,
President Goodluck Jonathan, condemned
the killings describing them as depressing
in the wake of the 53rd independence
celebration.
Speaking during the 53rd Independence
Anniversary Interdenominational Service,
at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, he
said anybody in his shoes would be short
of what to tell Nigerians nor words to
comfort the families of the affected
students. “If you are wearing my shoes,
what courage would you have to stand
here before Nigerians, what message will
you send to Nigerians, to the parents of
these young people, our future leaders,
students in school of Agriculture? would
you say that the killing of these students
is political?”, the President asked.
In a related development, the Senate
President, David Mark, condoled with the
government and people of Niger State
over the ill-fated boat mishap in the River
Niger near Malilli village in which no
fewer than 42 persons have been
confirmed dead.
Former vice president Atiku Abubakar also
described the Gujba killings as ‘senseless
and tragic’, saying, it casts a ‘horrible
image’ on the events marking the 53rd
National Day Anniversary. “As a father, I
am deeply saddened by these senseless
murders. These were young Nigerians
studying agriculture with a goal of helping
to feed our nation.
“We must urgently review our strategy
for confronting these cowards. The
murders at the Yobe State College of
Agriculture are further proofs that we
need to have a rethink on how we
provide security for our nation.” Quoting
late American civil rights hero, Dr. Martin
Luther King, (Jr.) as a rallying point for
Nigeria, Atiku said: “Those who love peace
must learn to organize as effectively as
those who love war. We must organize
ourselves better to provide dignity and
security for Nigeria. To defeat terror, we
must use much more potent, unbeatable
weapons: democracy, education and
opportunity, ” the former vice president
advised.

OVER 8000 WOMEN IN ZAMFARA SEEK ASSISTANCE TO GET MARRIED.
over 8,000 women on Thursday
matched to the Zamfara Hisbah
Commission seeking the state
government’s assistance to enable them
get married.
Led by the Chairperson of the Zamfara
Widows Association, Hajiya Suwaiba Isa and
their patron Alhaji Sa’idu Goshe, the
women said they were not living a normal
life and needed husbands to become
whole.
“Many of us cannot afford two meals in a
day because there are no men to support
us,” they said.
The patron, said the association has over
8,000 women, comprising 5,380 divorcees,
2,200 widows, 1,200 orphans and 80
others, whom he said, were looking for
men to marry.
He said the women also needed assistance
to purchase household items such as beds,
mattresses and other basic necessities
needed to move to their husband houses.
Goshe appealed to the commission to
assist the association in screening suitors
for the women.
He said the screening would determine the
suitors health status, source of livelihood
and ability to maintain a family.
Responding, the Chairman of the
commission, Dr Atiku Zawuyya,
commended the association for the
initiative, saying it would assist in ridding
the society of women of easy virtues.
Zawuyya promised to present the matter
to the state government for necessary
action, but urged the patron to also set up
a similar body for men to make the pairing
exercise easier. (NAN)
14 FOODS THAT CLEANSE THE LIVER!!!
Modern society is a sad state that
produces many over-processed livers.
When we overeat or eat processed or
fried foods, and, anytime we are exposed
to environmental pollutants or stress, the
liver becomes overworked and
overloaded. When the liver is taxed, it
can’t process toxins and fat in an efficient
way. There are many foods that can help
cleanse the liver naturally by stimulating
its natural ability to clean toxic waste
from the body.
1. Garlic
Just a small amount of this pungent white
bulb has the ability to activate liver
enzymes that help your body flush out
toxins. Garlic also holds high amounts of
allicin and selenium, two natural
compounds that aid in liver cleansing.
2. Grapefruit
High in both vitamin C and antioxidants,
grapefruit increases the natural cleansing
processes of the liver. A small glass of
freshly-squeezed grapefruit juice will help
boost production of the liver
detoxification enzymes that help flush out
carcinogens and other toxins.
3. Beets and Carrots
Both are extremely high in plant-
flavonoids and beta-carotene; eating
beets and carrots can help stimulate and
improve overall liver function.
4. Green Tea
This liver-loving beverage is full of plant
antioxidants known as catechins, a
compound known to assist liver function.
Green tea is not only delicious, it’s also a
great way to improve your overall diet.
Learn more about the benefits of green
tea.
5. Leafy Green Vegetables
One of our most powerful allies in
cleansing the liver, leafy greens can be
eaten raw, cooked, or juiced. Extremely
high in plant chlorophylls, greens suck up
environmental toxins from the blood
stream. With their distinct ability to
neutralize heavy metals , chemicals and
pesticides, these cleansing foods offer a
powerful protective mechanism for the
liver.
Try incorporating leafy greens such as
bitter gourd, arugula, dandelion greens,
spinach, mustard greens, and chicory into
your diet. This will help increase the
creation and flow of bile, the substance
that removes waste from the organs and
blood.
6. Avocados
This nutrient-dense super-food helps the
body produce glutathione, a compound
that is necessary for the liver to cleanse
harmful toxins.
7. Apples
High in pectin, apples hold the chemical
constituents necessary for the body to
cleanse and release toxins from the
digestive tract. This, in turn, makes it
easier for the liver to handle the toxic
load during the cleansing process.
8. Olive Oil
Cold-pressed organic oils such as olive,
hemp and flax-seed are great for the
liver, when used in moderation. They
help the body by providing a lipid base
that can suck up harmful toxins in the
body. In this way, it takes some of the
burden off the liver in terms of the toxic
overload many of us suffer from.
9. Whole Grains
Grains, such as brown rice, are rich in B-
complex vitamins which are nutrients
known to improve overall fat
metabolization, liver function and liver
decongestion. If possible, do not eat
foods with white flour , instead try eating
whole wheat alternatives.
10. Cruciferous Vegetables
Eating broccoli and cauliflower will
increase the amount of glucosinolate in
your system, adding to enzyme
production in the liver. These natural
enzymes help flush out carcinogens, and
other toxins, out of our body which may
significantly lower risks associated with
cancer.
11. Lemons & Limes
These citrus fruits contain very high
amounts of vitamin C, which aids the
body in synthesizing toxic materials into
substances that can be absorbed by
water. Drinking freshly-squeezed lemon
or lime juice in the morning helps
stimulate the liver.
12. Walnuts
Holding high amounts of the amino acid
arginine, walnuts aid the liver in
detoxifying ammonia. Walnuts are also
high in glutathione and omega-3 fatty
acids, which support normal liver
cleansing actions. Make sure you chew
the nuts well (until they are liquefied)
before swallowing.
13. Cabbage
Much like broccoli and cauliflower, eating
cabbage helps stimulate the activation of
two crucial liver detoxifying enzymes that
help flush out toxins. Try eating more
kimchi, coleslaw, cabbage soup and
sauerkraut.
14. Turmeric
The liver’s favorite spice. Try adding some
of this detoxifying goodness into your
next lentil stew or veggie dish for an
instant liver pick-me-up. Turmeric helps
boost liver detox, by assisting enzymes
that actively flush out dietary
carcinogens.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES CONSUMPTION CAN REDUCE MORTALITY.
A European study analyzes the relationship
between fruit and vegetable consumption
and the risk of mortality. As previous
research has already suggested, this study
concludes that fruit and vegetable
consumption reduces all-cause mortality,
and especially cardiovascular disease
mortality.
The benefits of fruit and vegetable
consumption are not a new discovery.
However, new research confirms their role
in reducing mortality. This reduction is
more significant in the case of deaths from
cardiovascular disease.
The analysis, recently published in the
'American Journal of Epidemiology', was
directed by researchers from ten
countries, including Spain, as part of the
European Prospective Investigation into
Cancer and Nutrition .
The sample analyzed includes 25,682
deaths (10,438 due to cancer and 5,125
due to cardiovascular disease) among the
451,151 participants studied over more
than 13 years.
"This study is the most significant
epidemiological study that this association
has examined to date," MarÃa José SÃ
¡nchez Pérez, director of the Andalusian
School of Public Health's (EASP) Granada
Cancer Registry and one of the authors of
the research, explains to SINC.
According to the results, a combined fruit
and vegetable consumption of more than
569 grams per day reduces the risk of
mortality by 10% and delays the risk of
mortality by 1.12 years compared to a
consumption of less than 249 grams per
day.
Furthermore, for every 200 gram increase
in daily fruit and vegetable consumption,
the risk falls by 6%. The proportion of
deaths that could be prevented if everyone
eating too few fruit and vegetables
increased their consumption by 100-200
grams per day — thus reaching the
recommended 400-500 grams per day — is
2.9%.
Previous studies already noted that fruit
and vegetable consumption, in accordance
with the recommended daily allowance,
prevents the development of chronic
diseases, and reduces the risk of mortality
by 10-25%.
"There is now sufficient evidence of the
beneficial effect of fruit and vegetable
consumption in the prevention of cancer
and other chronic diseases," Sánchez
states, "for this reason, one of the most
effective preventative measures is
promoting their consumption in the
population."
Fruit for the heart
A diet rich in fruit and vegetables reduces
the risk of cardiovascular disease mortality
by 15%. Furthermore, more than 4% of
deaths due to cardiovascular disease could
be prevented by consuming more than 400
grams of fruit and vegetables a day.
Considering fruit consumption separately,
no significant risk reduction was observed,
whereas vegetable consumption alone was
associated with a lower risk of mortality,
which was even more significant for raw
vegetables: high consumption reduces the
risk of mortality by 16 per cent.
"With regard to cancer mortality, no
statistically significant risk reduction was
found, although it will be necessary to
assess this according to specific types of
cancer," Sánchez adds.
Nevertheless, the expert highlights that
given that fruit and vegetable consumption
is associated with the risk of certain
cancers — colon and rectal, stomach, lung,
etc. — it is to be expected that their
consumption will also have a positive effect
on mortality due to these tumours.
