A former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Mr. Emeka Anyaoku, has faulted Nigeria’s current governance structure and called for the decentralisation of powers to the six federating units in Nigeria.
Mr Anyaoku told reporters at the 3rd Goddy Jidenma Biannual Lecture held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Lagos on Tuesday that the proposed National Dialogue would provide an opportunity to correct the faulty structure.
A guest lecturer at the event, professor emeritus of the Department of Political Science from the University of Jos, Prof. Isawa Elaigwu, insisted that the practice of federalism is relative and designed to solve problems peculiar to different local environments.
Professor Elaigwu listed Nigeria’s current challenges to include leadership, state creation and citizenship. He pointed out that federalism was not an elixir for solving all political problems.
The event, with the lecture topic; “the Practice of Federalism in Africa, the Nigerian experience and the way forward,” provided a platform for discussion on the proposed National Dialogue to audience from all walks of life.
Women were also urged to contribute to the dialogue when it eventually holds.
At the moment, awareness is growing and this may just be an avenue for true discussions for a way forward, as Nigerians await the outcome of consultations by the Presidential Advisory Committee on National Dialogue.
